Topic: Prog Supergroups? Posted: June 08 2010 at 12:33 |
IF you could make a supergroup of prog musicians (aside from Asia and ELP.....), who would you pick?
My dream prog super group: Vocals- Peter Gabriel (Genesis) Guitar- Robert Fripp (King Crimson) Bass- Chris Squire (Yes) Keys- Jon Lord (Deep Purple) Drums- Carl Palmer (ELP)

Ah. See, the "supergroup"/"dream band" thing tends to periodically come around and its typically new users who propose the idea. There's nothing inherently bad about this, though it does get a bit tedious since most of the permutations seem to involve the same elements. With that, I suppose we can spice it up: Brian Eno- Treated zither Jamie Muir- Percussion Mark Hollis- Vocals

Can you imagine the arguments/bust ups this band would have? 9 on the richter scale maybe ![LOL LOL](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif)
I know there have been several million threads of this nature but they are completely harmless as far as I know and don't represent a threat to wildlife or the ozone layer.
I guess my selection would be:
Vocals -Chris Thompson (Manfred Manns Earth Band)
Guitar - Jan Akkerman (Focus)
Bass - Klaus Peter -Matziol (Eloy)
Keys - Keith Emerson (ELP)
Drums - Neil Peart (Rush)
5 different countries represented and hopefully a bit more harmony!

Could be interesting to replace Howe by someone who gets a more 'powerful' guitar sound in a classc Yes lineup. Not Rabin, someone like... Blackmore ?

I once read that if Keith Emerson ever wanted a guitar player on ELP, then it would have been Howe. I guess it would have been very interesting to hear that.

I think Jamie Muir should play percussion in my band
I mean, as awesome as I think my drummer is, there are some things only a top-notch percussionist can do

Back when Emerson was in The Nice he spent a day with Steve Howe hanging out and playing music. Both hit it off like a house on fire and have similar tastes in music especially on the classical side of things. Unfortunately the timing just wasn't right as Emerson was keen to keep The Nice as a 3 peice and Howe didn't want to leave the band he was in. However to this day they have a strong mutual appreciation. Howe referred to ''the great Keith Emerson'' in an interview a few years ago.

I always look at the members of Transatlantic and think about who could replace each of the members if any of them should quit the band. You basically have a dynamic drummer, a versatile base player, and two very good all-rounders.
John Mitchell (It Bites, Arena etc) would be a good replacement for one of the all-rounders.
Rikard Sjöblom (Beardfish) could also fill one of those slots as well.
Rob van der Linden (5Bridges) is a great drummer with an obvious ability to compose quality prog rock.
John Jowitt (IQ) could seal the deal on bass
Put these four together and I think they would make some beautiful music together.
