HI PROG FRIENDS, THIS IS CÉSAR INCA. Adele Schmidt and José Zegarra, through Zeitgeist Media LLC. Adele is an experienced documentary maker, who has been awarded for her previous work; José, on the other hand, is a prog record collector and reviewer, and also owns a Spanish-language prog blog called Autopoietican. It’s only an anticipatory trailer, but it already is quite lovely, as you will see. What this trailer shows is the documentary’s approach to the world of prog rock, not restricted to a celebration of the glorious age of the 70s, but mainly focusing on the many ways that this rock genre is managing to survive in the music business, still brewing good bands and albums, still catching the attention of log-time loyal fans and new ones, still finding a place in the market. Among the many people interviewed in this forthcoming documentary are: Gary Green (the Gentle Giant guitarist), less celebrated but equally talented veterans such as the musicians of The Muffins and Cheer-Accident, new prog veterans such as Roine Stolt, Fabio Zuffanti, D.F.A. and the Cabezas de Cera guys, and also new coming leaders of the prog movement such as Phideaux and Deluge Grander. All of them talk about how they create their material, how they see the current state of the music industry, explaining their ideas on music, art and integrity, also doing the old task of attempting to define and describe “what prog rock is”, etc. All this and more is delivered in an environment of camaraderie that includes music publishers and audience members at the NEARfest and Prog Day events. Last but not least, there will be images of some bands rehearsing and recording material in various studios. By now, 80% of the footage and the aforementioned fundraising trailer of 10 Min. have been cut. According to Adele and José, “the next step is to film the last few interviews, complete a rough cut by January 2010 and a fine cut of 70 minutes by May This is where we, avid prog rock lovers, can step in… So far the film has been self-financed by the filmmakers. In order to advance the film to the next level (rough cut), Adela and José are trying to raise $3000 by the end of January 2010. Every amount is welcomed. According to the trailer’s website: If your gift is $50 or more, you will get a promo code with a 50% discount that can be used towards the purchase of the DVD. If you give a gift larger than $100 your name will also appear in the “Thank you” section of the end credits. If your support for the film is greater than $500, your name/organization will be included under the section “This film was made possible with the generous support of” of the end credits. If your gift is $1,000 or more, your name/organization will be mentioned in the front credits of the film. This is good news for prog rock in the area of cinematography, and well… we can be part of it, too. |

What would be nice was for everyone at PA to chip in a small amount and have the front credits thanking ProgArchives.

Good luck with the project.
I should however make it clear that ProgArchives is not associated with this project, and that members take the risk themselves in respect of any money pledged or paid.

Easy Livin is right - maybe it would be better if everyone around here helps as an individual. On the other hand, PA as a virtual institutions, might be helpful for this project in a non-financial way, couldn't it? Perhaps... maybe... how about including information from Prog Archives in the film that is duly acknowledged, or have some Special Collaborator being interviewed by José?...Let me make it clear that I am not part of the producing staff of this upcoming documentary: this post is only concerning a couple of ideas I've just come up with.
Kind regards.

I guess it will only be momentary, I don't know. I know straight from the people who made this documentary that they plan to premiere it in some prog rock festival as well as some regular film festivals.
I wonder if there will be some Academy award nomination in the horizon: a documentary about a marginal rock genre that is not punk or black metal related, a genre that is difficult to pigeonhole in itself. Intellectually speaking, it is already an interesting subject.
Kind regards.

I really do hope this gets an international release of some sort (I'd be happy with a download), because I've been looking forward to seeing this for months.

Superb documentary on the contemporary progressive scene
"Romantic Warriors" is a film I jumped on the second I found out about in the forums of ProgArchives. Finally, someone took the time to recognize and document the current day progressive rock scene. As filmmakers Adele Schmidt & José Zegarra Holder make abundantly clear, there is a ton of great progressive music out there right now, as much as there ever was. The problem is the music business among other distribution and media issues, and the fact that so many fans of progressive rock are still captivated by the 1970s. Of course the 70s remain the zenith for many fans but the film argues we have to put away our old faves from time to time and discover the current bands pushing the boundaries. This high quality feature length documentary features the following bands: -Cabezas De Cera -Cheer Accident -Deluge Grander -D.F.A. -Gary Green of Gentle Giant -Karmakanic -La Maschera Di Cera -Oblivion Sun -Paul Sears of The Muffins -Phideaux -Qui -Rob Martino -Roine Stolt -Gentle Giant All of the artists are interviewed for their thoughts on their music and on the future of the progressive scene, as well as what it means to be a band in this competitive environment. We get rare live footage of them at the various East Coast USA prog festivals. These festivals and their fans and promoters are also stars of the show, giving their insights on the music and how they fight to keep the scene alive in the age of a brain-dead media. Prog rock insiders are also interviewed like the legendary owner of Orion Studios and the guys at Cuneiform Records, among others. (Sorry to those I left out, I wasn't taking notes for this review, I was too busy jamming to live DFA!) This is a documentary and not a live concert DVD, so keep in mind the live clips are fairly short and the narrative keeps interrupting the music. The live moments are the highlight for me but there are not complete songs here. Had the DVD come with full performance clips of the songs included as extras it would have been the icing on the prog cake. The highlight for this writer was getting intimate and close-up looks at bands I admire very much, like Dan Britton and Deluge Grander. It was fantastic to see how he put together their last album and then see it played live. Equally delicious was the chance to see live performances, albeit much too brief, by Italian gems DFA and La Maschera De Cera. The obvious joy of Cabezas De Cera was captivating as was hearing Phideaux interviewed and seeing them perform. (Phideaux, when are we going to get a high quality live DVD?) The only sad part was seeing the small turnouts for some of the prog festivals, which in a just world would be drawing more fans than Taylor Swift. Then again, the world is not just and we are lucky to have these great bands willing to go to great lengths to be there for us, in a time and place where being a prog-rock musician is not exactly lucrative. Many documentary films have been made about the 70s giants. This one about the current scene is very special and absolutely essential viewing to anyone who loves modern progressive rock and wants some insight into how it is surviving in this age. Very highly recommended. |
