Ok, I appologise if this slightly offends anyone, but I can think of no other way to express myself...

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!!!!! That was well worth the wait. When I got home from work on Friday there was a HUGE package waiting for me, and I just had to smile coz I knew it was my Red Deluxe Edition. Ok, the 'book' is stunning really, really class. The photo's are amazing, you really do feel you have got your moneys worth with this, and that's even before you've put any fookin music on....

So, on to the music. I really wish I had been there during the play of this. The Incident Tour was excellent, however this just blows everthing away. FOABP kicks things off, and to hear it in it's entirety live is just a stunning experience. The title track just makes your hairs stand on end and just grows and grows and grows until it finally explodes with the awsome riff 3/4 of the way through wit an energy that doesn't quite come across on the Studio version. Oh, and before I forget to mention it, I have never seen Wilson look more focused and moody than on here, there's definatley a feeling and energy like no other coming from him, he really means buisness.
Then My Ashes. Wonderful stuff, although I do have a slight problem with this version... John Wesely's vocals in the chorus just aren't up to scratch, to the point of cringing. Maybe it's just me, but it comes across better with Steven doing it, it's more believable.
Ok, ANESTHETIZE. AWSOME. Simply put. Special mention to Wesely too, who does a great job with the guitar solo in the first section, it's never going to be as good as Alex Lifeson's, but I really think he puts a lot of soul into it. Gavin Harrison = WOW. You get a real feel that everyone, especially Barbreri, is enjoying themselves. Every now and then the camera cuts to him smiling when someone is playing a solo, very nice.
Sentimental is excellent too, you have to admire the harmonies between Wilson and Wesley.
Not much to add to Way Out Of Here. We have all witnessed it live and know how good it is.
The album closer 'Sleep Together'... Well this song has always brought up mixed reviews, but I have always thought of it as a grower. It gets better with each listen, and I was always 100% certain that it was made to be played live, and man is it awsome. Wilson growls away with brute force and the band just ooze class, feeding off his energy. At this point I felt really knackered, but then I realised it had only just begin.
Que 'What Happens Now' one of the highlights of Nil Reccuring. This has it's moments live, but I don't feel it's quite as good as the studio version. I love the way it opens, Wilson in fine form going for it with the vocals really brings the song across well, it has an almost dance feel to it and it's very, very cool. The reason I say it's not quite as good live is because the guitars at the climax aren't crunchy enough, maybe I'm just being overanalitical though!
Normal out-classes Sentimental here, what a song this is. A ballad with a metal riff halfway through, and it works!!! Played to perfection, one slip up and it would all fall apart, that's how intricut the playing is. Love the vocals. Barberi's synths, like in every song, are amazing.
Then Dark Matter. I didn't have the set list in front of me so I had no idea this was up next, so the inro by Barberi had me really scratching my head... Then I nearly wet myself when I realised what it was, this is just superb, it sounds awsome live. The ultimate moment of the gig is Wilson's guitar solo, my oh my does he play it, watch the energy flowing from him... That's how to play guitar!!!
Drown With Me is wonderful, not quite as good live but it will make you smile.
Cheating The Polygraph is possibly the highlight of the Nil Reccuring EP, this is really, really good live the atmosphere created by the sound is just umbelievable, I keep going on about it, but the playing from everyone is just top draw.
Half Light is possibly the one dissapointment for me I'm afraid... It's just too 'Stadium Rock' with the glowing guitar and huge guitar solo at the end, it's just not Half Light for me... It needs to be more intimate sounding, although I'm sure I'd change my mind if I was actually there.
Sever... WOW. I'll talk about vocals later but this is excellent.
Wedding Nails is a nice inclusion, and comes across very well here. I was never much a fan of it, but it sounds really good live.
Strip The Soul/Dot Three.. There's something lacking/missing that I just can't quite put my finger on here, I was slightly dissapointed.
Sleep Of No Dreaming, see comments for Sever.
Halo, well we now know why this was the only song from the 'Arriving Somewhere' DVD... how else could you close the DVD if this wasn't included? It had to be on it because they didn't close with another song.
The bonus track 'Prodigal' on the CD is very good, however the closing guitar solo is a let down, I much prefer the intense Floyd like solo on the studio version.
So to sum up, this is a fantastic package, the gig is amazing. Even better than Arriving Somewhere, granted... Both have there highlights, making them both essential.
Steven Wilson's vocals are magnificent, seriously, every song is sung to perfection, listen to Sever, Normal, ANESTHETIZE... f**k it, listen to the whole thing if you don't believe me!!!
Musically it is flawless. Tighter than any sh*t indie band you are likely to see, bollocks to Kings Of Leon, THIS IS MUSIC.
So, after all that I give this 10/10 for the entire package, thanks Steven for this amazing RED special edition, and thanks to Porcupine Tree for just being a one in a million band. I shall cherish this forever I am sure.

There was a FOABP + Nil Recurring 5.1 master, both on the same DVD-A, which was available to the ROABP last year. Wish I was a member back then, they're fetching 100 USD on ebay now

then what is this? available from burnigshed.

^Excellent review, sir! I'm not sure what I could add to these comments. Needless to say, its a fantastic DVD, and superior to even the mighty Arriving Somewhere. I had no willpower, so I've already bought the Standard edition. But I can't wait for the deluxe grey edition to be delivered. The photo book and the CDs sound lush.

I was seriously considering finding a torrent of the Out Absentia demos last night. I can't believe it, because I do not condone the piracy of music usually. I believe that artists, including musical artists, should be paid for their work, just as a plumber gets paid for fixing your taps. It's their job.

Fortunately, I thought better of it. I was just desperate to hear this material. But if SW doesn't want it released, so be it. I decided not to rip off PT. I respect them, so I will support them by actually purchasing their music.

Maybe the re-release of Recordings is due not only to popular demand, but to combat the bootlegger crowd?

Just gave Deadwing a listen whilst out for a run; man, the re-recorded version of Shesmovedon might be better than the original. Such awesome stuff.

Also, I'd love to hear some of the Out Absentia stuff, and I might give in and get it some day...

Also, just found this:

"You know, me and Steven have been talking for years, ever since we started working together, doing something like writing music together. He had this song that he wrote for the In Absentia album called “Cut Ribbon” which never made it on the album, it was the best song I ever heard. But the other guys thought it was too heavy, it was like kind of Opeth-sounding in a way, like Opeth and early Pink Floyd, you know…beautiful vocal harmonies, but they other guys thought it was too heavy so it didn’t make it on the album, so we said we’d record it. And Portnoy, I can’t remember, but…they tour with Dream Theater I think, Porcupine [Tree], and I guess they started talking, you know, we needed a drummer and Portnoy said “Yeah, I wanna play. Sure. this is going to be a musical project, not something that we expect necessarily to sell, but I guess it will. It’s not going to be like we’re going to present...when we do, it’s not going to be like “This new All-star band!" It’s going to be a musical project and it might be very inaccessible to some…I have no idea what it’s going to be like. But I’m pretty sure it’s going to happen”

http://www.petrucciforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=33206

From Mikael (Opeth) about a track from Out Absentia... If one of the tracks is that good we need to have it!

Also, RE Recordings: For ~3 years, the only way to get it was either buying it used for a ridiculous price on eBay or Amazon, buying the MP3's from iTunes or getting super lucky and finding a copy for a decent price in a CD store, so I think it's just a re-release to make it actually possible for fans to get a proper CD copy.

I'm afraid I have to strongly disagree about the re-recording of Shemovedon... It's not a scratch on the original. The vocal is good, but the harmonies aren't on anywhere near as good, and the guitar solo is weak in comparison to the original. The second heavier verse is better though.
I remember reading somewhere that Steven was asked by some radio station in Japan to re-record it for the Japanese release, and they promised to give it some airtime. Wilson was very skeptical about it, but eventually went along with it. But the station never played it.

^I just prefer the more acoustic-y noise and heavier sound overall, both versions are fantastic though.

Btw Palliams, awesome review, you should post it on the reviews page for Anesthetize... As was mentioned on the page before, it barely has any reviews, and another 5* wouldn't hurt

^Thanks ProgKidJoel, I have never written a review for an album/DVD here before, so wasn't sure if it was up to much. You have convinced me to post it proper though. There is a brilliant live version of Shesmovedon that's available on 'porcupine tree - xm' which you can get on the download section on the PT site. Much better than the version on Warszawa

How does one become a Resident of a Blank Planet?  I applied to become a fan member or something on www.porcupinetree.com (although they haven't got back to me yet)... is that what that was?

I've been a member for a year or so now... Hmmm. Did you have to make a payement? I had to pay £30 to become a member. You get exclusive access to tickets, merchendise, CD's etc.

^I think you may have signed up to a mailing list rather than the fan club.

Here's the link:
http://www.burningshed.com/store/porcupinetree/product/298/1394/

Although it seems to be closed for this year or so. w

If I remember correctly, it was about 20 pounds; can't say for 100% though.

^ Yeah, I signed up to the mailing list, but there was something else as well, and it involved it having to be reviewed... I don't know... Confused

Anesthetize just came.

So did I.

But seriously, it's one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen... And I haven't even watched it yet

Definitely will be putting this on later tonight; can't wait!

Wow...

That was amazing. Seriously, absolutely fantastic!
Absolutely blew me away. Every thing was perfect!

Favourites so far are Half-Light, Anesthetize, Normal, Sentimental, Dark Matter and Drown With Me. Can't say I disliked any of the tracks though.

^Glad you enjoyed it. It's awesome, isn't it? I am starting to wish I had the willpower to wait! I've watched the standard edition several times now, but i'm still excited about the deluxe. I ordered the grey, so it probably wont arrive for a few days. How's the packaging and photo book? I hear its breathtaking.

Man, seriously, the packaging is amazing. Like Palliams said, you seriously feel like you've got more than you payed for as soon as you hold the book; the photos are all absolutely brilliant too, the paper and printing quality is all awesome... Just flawless.
It really is simply amazing. All the photos are amazing, too.
There's some other art in the book as well (like a few pages of the FOABP art) and the setlist and everything else is fantastic.
The 2CD's also sound absolutely fantastic, and they sit in the book perfectly.

Also, here's the page for the guitar SW uses during Half-Light: http://visionaryinstruments.com/VG2.html

Awesome stuff

Also, I really think John Wesley would make such a fantastic full time addition to PT; his vocals on My Ashes are absolutely stunning, and he's an absolutely brilliant guitarist in his own right.
