Mariano is 40 years old and still gets the job done!
Sure, not quite as sharp as his prime and he seems to need a little more effort, but really he's pretty much on the money and rarely has tough/bad outings. Gunna be sad when he calls it quits... Also, I feel for Brian Matusz. Young pitcher, a bit inconsistent but good and stuck on the O's. Pitched into the 7th, held the Yanks to just one run, and the moment he's taken out an error is committed and he gets a Loss. |

Nice win by the M's last night...7-1 over the Twins...Cliff Lee tonight see if they can duplicate the bats from last night.
Slight glimmer of hope...June is a long baseball month, they need it to pick up some ground.

Holy sh*t, Batman! Jr. has retired! Fitting, June 2, the day he was drafted by the M's.

A Detroit pitcher (forgot name) was one out away from pitching a perfect game (the THIRD of the year)
The out was made at 1st base, no denying it....but called safe! Thus his perfect game, falls one out short. F*CK! I guess at least he'll always know it was a perfect game + anyone with eyes Edited by JJLehto - June 02 2010 at 19:53 |

Yea, and after an AMAZING catch on a hard ht ball to center. While I'm not a Tiger fan, I feel incredibly sorry for the guy, he got completely robbed of his perfecto by a really terrible call. Edited by Evolutionary Sleeper - June 02 2010 at 20:47 |

You have got to be frickin' kidding me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The kid that got the hit is PA member Drew's relative. (either cousin or nephew). That was the most depressed that I have ever left a victory. All 19,000 of us in attendance knew that he was out. GRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!

Yea, it really wasn't even close, I dunno what happened to that ump. Horrible. Saw a quote from him on ESPN. "I just cost that kid a perfect game." lordy....I feel bad for the guy. They keep showing replays of it, after the play he starts to go into celebration mode only to have it ripped away from him by Mr. Magoo at first. ![]() |

We are all jumping up and down arms in the air hugging complete strangers and then all of a sudden nothing. The hitter is called safe.

It would have been the first perfect game in Detroit Tiger history. Austin Jackson made the absolute best play of the season for the first out in the 9th inning. If that had ended up a hit then it would have been "ok" but to lose it on a cheap infield hit really really sucks. The fact that the umpire blew it makes it a million times worse.

Yea, I just read the article on MLB.com:
"I just cost that kid a perfect game," Joyce said. "I thought he beat
the throw. I was convinced he beat the throw, until I saw the replay. It
was the biggest call of my career." I know nobody's perfect, but that wasn't even that close of a play and he gets paid to do it. Galarraga's name would be forever etched in the history of the game had it not been for that call...shameful. |

The sports talk guy made the following comment "this should have gone down in history as one of the greatest individual moments in Detroit sports history, but instead we are all sad and depressed because of the blown call". The Tigers clubhouse is basically taking the position that it was even better than a perfect game because he got 28 straight batters out.

Here is one of many articles regarding the game and play including a video of the play. http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/blog/big_league_stew/post/Robbed-Blown-call-costs-Armando-Galarraga-a-per?urn=mlb,245292 Judge for yourself, but there is absolutely no doubt in mind that Galarraga threw a perfect game tonight.

MLB is deciding whether or not to review the call as I write this. I doubt the call will be overturned though...well, I'd be surprised anyway.

Yeah, I mean as much as we may WANT it....they can't go back.
I mean, it was called, game over, they can't go back and change it. If they did it'd open up a real can of worms. I spose Selig could do it and just say "this is a special case" but really it'd get messy if they did it. Also, very sad to hear about Jr. He was indeed one of the greats of our time, and if it wasn't for injuries who knows the numbers he'd have put up. Also, one of the very few players I have no doubt about him being clean. With his retirement...A-Rod is now the current home run leader among active players. |

After catching whatever it is that the Mariners hitters have, the Tigers' hitters finally broke out with 12 runs and 17 hits against the Indians today to win 12 - 6. The Tigers presented Armando Galarraga with a Corvette prior to the game to congratulate him for his "Perfect" game.

^ Nice to hear. I guess it's over though.
Ump apologized, seemed sincere, (I'd feel god awful) and he came right out and said I f*cked up and screwed the kid over. Galarraga accepted. I'm sure he know it was a perfect game, we all do. Let's move on. However, the whole instant replay debate is already creeping back in. Not that I'm opposed... |

I think the ump was only "listening" for the bang-bang sound they hear to make a call. I suspect he thought since Galarraga was coming to make the play that it was gonna be close.
It was a snowcone catch so there was no glove sound, all he heard was the bag sound and called him safe, he was only looking at the bag as you can see in the replay.
Regardless..huge bad call!!! I think MLB made the right call in not reversing the on field decision and I also hope that instant replay really does not get expanded anymore in MLB. Overall umps have a pretty high % of making the right calls. This one just happened to be huge.
As a catcher I see tons of great calls by umps but also bad ones...The good umps will recognize the mistake and own up.......I can live with that.

The shame is that in the same game, Johnny Damon was called safe on a close play in the 8th inning. The Tigers went on to score 2 more runs, so instead of leading 1 - 0, it was 3 - 0 going into the 9th. I believe that instant replays showed that he was out at that play.
In yesterday's game, the Indians hit a ground ball to Carlos Guillen who threw the ball wildly to Miguel Cabrera. Cabrera was pulled off of the base, but had enough time to get back to the base and tag it still 2 or 3 steps before the runner got there. The runner was called safe. So that is 3 blown calls at 1st base in 2 games. I am not opposed to instant replay at all for close plays like that. Basically, what would need to happen is MLB would have to be like the NHL and have someone watching the games on video, with the authority to call down and make changes for close plays like this. Obviously, balls and strikes would have to be off limits. Basically, it could be limited to the couple of plays a game that usually bring the manage out of the dugout to argue the call. For the most part these are relatively rare. This system is much quicker than the NFL system where the ref has to leave the field and watch the plays under the hood.
I have always found it funny that the first baseman must be on first base and catch the ball before they will call an out, but on a play at 2nd base, the short stop just needs to have been in the area of second base some time during the course of the play.
