With the few posts that I have seen from Nightshine I think that I have come to a conclusion to what half I think he is in.

Thank you Nightshine, it took 7 pages and somebody finally got the formula right.
Re the many comments about complication and difficulty in music:
The most difficult piece of sheet music I ever attempted was a piano piece by Schoenberg.
As far as bands go, I've played almost every genre you can name, the most difficult I encountered were Latin Jazz (Afro-Cuban) and Nigerian 'funk' (generically called world beat by many).

Yes, mostly. There might be some other mitigating factors. I don't know that my IQ is actually that high but I was exposed to a lot of classical music growing up. Pop music just *bores* m for the most part.

in discussing the meaning of words like "intellectual", "intellect", or "intelligence", one should always remember that there are different types of intelligence, and different facets to what one describes as the intellect or an intellectual-as i am learning myself from this thread, making generalisations about these matters doesn't always work! anyway, interesting talk

I believe in Howard Gardner's multiple intelligence theory (american psychologist) :
There is not the only one general intelligence, one general ability of human's mind. It's possible to determine at least seven different types of intelligence :
1) mathematical-logical
2) verbal-linguistic
3) visual-spatial
4) bodily-kinesthetic
5) interpersonal
6) intrapersonal
7) musical-rhythmical - the ability to detect musical qualities of complex music or even the ability to compose music
The question is what kind of correlations exist between the intelligences. Or are they completely independent?
It's obvious e.g. some people with high verbal intelligence (writers, poets, translators) are not necessarily good in mathematics and vice versa, etc. etc.
On the other hand a lot of people seem to have substandard or above standard level of more types of intelligences.
My opinion is some correlation exists, at least some types of intelligence are not completely independent, but this correlation is not too strong.
So, that's my answer : we, proggers have obviously above average musical intelligence, due to certain correlation we (as a sample of population) are also above average in some other types of intelligence. I believe in it. But it's impossible to generalise more. Two different proggers are certainly very different in other aspects of human's abilities.

I've listened to prog for many years. While going to school and obtaining my master's degree I listened to Prog while I studied for some exams. I am proud to say that I did NOT neccessarily do well on exams when I participated in that activity.
I think therefore I am. I am therefore I love prog. I also love a lot of the new indie-folk bands. Maybe you, dear reader, enjoy prog and hip-hop, what is that to me? We are free to love whatever music we want whether we are intellegent or not. That's the beauty of it.
Quite frankly, I think I love prog not because of my parents, my siblings (none of them like prog), my genes or any of that. I love it because of my piano teacher and her love of the classics which influenced me to listen to classical music and helped me appreciate progressive music. I was attracted to progressive before I even knew it was it's own genre. I just remember telling a friend many many years ago which bands I loved and she said, "It sounds like you love progressive rock." I had to ask her what progressive rock was, then I realized she was right.
I only know I love progressive music and that's what matters. May it always exist.

 This is a very interesting take on Neitzsche. I would like to see more of your reasoning, gentlemen, as I would find it hard to see the author of The Birth of Tragedy as someone who spent too little time living. I regard that as one of the most joyful and celebratory books ever made. Regardless of what the nihilists and their ferrets say, Neitzsche loved life and celebrated the fact that we were not constrained by the idea of 'too much thinking'. This is, after all, one of the only websites where a 5000 word review of an album is met with fascination.
