We shared the same birth date and i'll never forget the summer of 1981 when i played that "Heaven And Hell" cassette all that summer driving around the beach. What a voice ! I remember Kim Mitchell talking about him a couple of years ago, talking about playing in the same Swedish festival and watching him up close and not believing how great he could sing even after all those years. He hadn't lost a thing.

...for some reason, I was looking around YouTube for Dio stuff a few days ago (I didn't even know RJD had cancer!), and I found this gem...

Saw RJD on the innaugral Rainbow tour in 1976. He was fantastic. Here are two of my favorite
vocals from RJD. They are from Kerry Livgren's Seeds of Change album in 1980:

What a terrible loss, the news of his passing hit me like a hard brick in the face, coincidently i have been listening to the songs "Wishing Well" & "Rainbow Eyes" by Black Sabbath and Rainbow respectively for the past 2 weeks,
Now, listening to the ending of Stargazer, Dio's closing lines have a profound impact on me:
"Time is standing still He gave back my will Going home I'm going home
My eyes are bleeding And my heart is leaving here But it's not home
Take me back He gave me back my will
Going home I'm going home
My eyes are bleeding And my heart is leaving here But it's not home But it's not home
Take me back, take me back Back to my home"

Horrible news. And just as he was entering a whole new and brilliant phase of his career with Heaven and Hell.
I had the good fortune of seeing him three times with Heaven and Hell - at Radio City Music Hall, Jones Beach, and Madison Square Garden. He was phenomenal - a uniquely gifted singer and intelligent person - he treated his fans like they were intelligent, also. An inspiration to know that at 67, you can still rock with the best of them - and still be one of the best of them...

I am shocked and saddened, and won't play anything but Dio today.

Back from holiday & this hits me like a hammer... I thought he was fighting back & winning against the stomach cancer
RJD was a truly gifted vocalist & writer with one of the most distinctive voices in heavy rock; Elf, Rainbow, Sabbath, Solo, Heaven & Hell...
One of rock's genuinely gifted men gone - short in stature, huge in voice, you will be missed.
RIP Ronnie

Rest in Peace Ronnie! It was surely one of the best rock singer I've ever listened to.

Total bummer, at first when he was reported dead it wasn't true. My brother told me this the other night but it turned out to be a hoax, but then some hours later he really did die.
RIP Ronnie, Ride the Tiger.

Oh man...
I had heard that he had cancer. But I thought he'd pull through.
RIP, Ronnie. You were one of the greats. By conincidence, I was listening to the Holy Diver album just a while ago, before I heard this awful news.

Hello, mirror. So glad to see you, my friend. It's been a while...

I got an email this morning that told me the news. I came here to update the RJD has cancer thread, but I see that the news was already here. I happened to be listening to a mix tape this morning which included Man On The Silver Mountain. While listening to it I wondered how he was feeling and made a mental note to check and see if there was any news. Unfortunately, it is very sad news. My condolences to Wendy and all of his friends and family.

Indeed! He had such a great and characteristic voice! And he invented the sign! "He's the king of Rock n Roll" - King of Rock n Roll, from DIO's "Sacred Heart"He sure is, or was!
