Yes' Roundabout.
The song that got me into prog 36 years ago (didn't pay much attention when it was released).
Here's an excerpt from the Rolling Stone review:
"Roundabout, marked by a thick, chugging texture which almost imperceptibly accumulates, during deceptively innocent little breaks and fills, a screaming, shattering intensity that builds and builds until suddenly everything drops away but Wakeman's liquid organ trills, some scattered guitar notes and Jon Anderson's pure, plaintive voice: "In and around the lake/Mountains come out of the sky and they/Stand there." It's a tour-de-force, a complete knockout, and perhaps the most quietly devastating moment to appear on a record in recent memory." Richard Cromelin, 3-16-72.

This is a tough one, the sort I could spend many days and nights pondering. However the first thing that comes to mind is Misplaced Childhood by Marillion. Im not even a huge fan of the band, but on the right occasion it can reduce me to tears. Somewhere between the concept and the highs and lows evoked by the music, the feelings of elation when I listen to it are unavoidable. Great list by the way. I will enjoy checking out many of the others favorites on it. |

This is an unbelievably difficult exercise. I would have to say that in recent history, some of the best prog has been penned by Mr, Neal Morse, and if I had to pick one, it would be...........The Question Mark cd. Going back in time? It would have to be Selling England. Its loaded with classics- although I loathe Battle.

Probably Pink Floyd - Animals and will always be for sentimental reasons.
Prog Rock wise- within the more commercial scene- the album most deserving of the top spot, I find to be Larks Tongue΄s in Aspic. Breaking through? I certainly think so - with a sledgehammer to boot. But then again who cares? Tournaments with actual results dwell in sports, they can never really exist within music. That said, it΄s interesting to see what sort of album people hang their crown on... |
