The reason why I have mentioned Jeff Beck is not his playing on Amused to Death, but the fact reported in the book "Pigs might fly" that he was contacted to replace Barrett before Gilmour, so he might have been the PF guitarist.
@Paravion: Gilmour and Latimer boring??? a guitar is that object with six or twelve strings used to produce sounds. Are you sure that we are speaking about the same thing?
Well, everybody has the right to think what he wants. A forum is just to discuss, not to fight. Who's a good guitarist in your opinion?
Last comment: saying that Waters has a good voice is like saying that he plays Bass....
I'm joking. He's not Jaco Pastorius, but I don't look for jazz when I listen tp PF. The same reason why Al di Meola can be more skilled than Gilmour, but he doesn't give me the same sensations.
Probably what we were used to smoke in the 70's is no longer available

Fred frith is my favorite guitarplayer.
I don't seek a fight, I just find it boring to listen to gilmour and latimer play guitar (a generalization of course). What I think and might not think about music, I normally don't discuss - I just claim it. Discussions of this sort are absolutely pointless - but occasionally entertaining.

I think that both are essential for PF to be PF but if I HAVE to choose I go with Waters. Gilmour is a great guitar player but as others have said, it is Waters' grandiose ambitions and lyrical conceits that gave Pink Floyd its dark, edgy progressive edge. Without Waters and with Gilmour in the driving seat, I think they'd have turned out a musically accomplished but fairly generic AOR band.

Gilmour would definitely win in a fight. The rest is not interesting to me.

@paravion: yes, that's more or less what I was meaning as guitar.
At the end I can only agree with harmonium.ro.
What about a post like Nick Mason vs Ringo Starr?

I suppose all anyone need look at is how many non-Floyd people helped write songs in the post Waters years. David is a gifted singer and player with an impeccable instinct for melody, and the band wouldn't have been what it was without any of them, but Waters was clearly the masthead

Firstly, I love the five of them, my favorite music and always will be. They are the four elements come together to make music, musically David provided the sugar for Roger's medicine to go down with.
Secondly, I saw the 1994 tour and it is still the most amazing spectacle I have ever witnessed, could only be topped by seeing a ufo land or Nibiru cross the sky.
I saw Roger's tour in 1999, and then the Dark Side tour, and I must say the emotion was so much higher at Roger's shows.

Hi,
i think in the end, that Roger and David will make their piece. I would not be surprised if David showed up in a whole bunch of shows in the upcoming Roger tour, simply to give people a big thrill and excite them and make it a memorable night for everyone involved.
It's time to bury the hatchet.
I'm just not sure I can bunch up 200 bux though!

Just to set the record straight before we even start, I am fully aware that Pink Floyd would not be Pink Floyd without both David Gilmour and Roger Waters. I think everyone can agree to that. However, who do you like more?
My vote is very clear, David Gilmour.
Let's compare their recent activity. David Gilmour releases a great album "On an Island", then goes on tour supporting that album. I saw him in Toronto's Massey Hall which was an intimate 1500 capacity theater. His first set was the entire new album. His second set, consisted of Pink Floyd songs...rare Floyd songs. He played Echoes....all 24 minutes of it! Fat Old Sun, Wots...uh the deal, etc...
Now, let's look at Rogers Waters. On his last tour, he played the entire DSOTM album, in arenas.
David, plays small intimate venues, playing new material, and rare Floyd - great for the fans, and not so much for his pocket. See the difference?
As for the past, well then we have a more heated debate, but ultimately, I believe the relationship and chemistry of these 2 guys in the same studio along with Richard and Nick created the magic.
David does not need Roger to create great music, but a new album would have been just something out of this world. Too bad this will never happened (we miss Richard).
David wins this one for me. |
Oh give me a break, I'm tired of people making David out to be the saint and Roger the bad guy.
So what if Roger is a control freak? There's other rock icons who fall into that category. He still got some great albums out of Floyd as a result.
To say Roger is the one totally living in the past is ridiculous, he's been doing some pretty out there stuff and experimenting with things that Floyd never did, the guy wrote a freaking Opera. Not a rock opera, an actual opera.
Meanwhile Dave has made nothing but Floyd derivative music for the past 25 years, and using The Floyd name. I think it's easy to guess who has been making more money lately.
Granted Gilmour has argubly put out better music (though that song Waters wrote for The Last Mimzy was really good) but I'd say Waters is the more ambitious of the two.

Unfortunatly I'm not as optimistic as you about Gilmour shoing up in some Wall shows. I hope you are right and I am wrong.

Waters is playing The Wall this summer. Tsh. I already have my money saved up for Rush. But still, of these two I'd have to go with Waters. Without him, the band wouldn't be half as famous as it is today.

Let's forget PF and look at their solo works:
My personal opinions are:
The Pros and Cons of Hitch-Hiking - 3 stars but one of the worst performances of Eric Clapton
Radio Kaos - 4 stars for the concept but not all the songs are that good
Amused to Death - 4.5 stars
David Gilmour - 4 stars even if the best song is the one not written by him (There's no way out of here)
About Face - 3.5 stars with the musicians who played in that album I could have expected more, but all the songs have an average-high level.
On an Island - 4.5 stars
I still vote for Gilmour but the difference is not so big.
About the live perfromances, I'm sorry for Roger Waters, but In the Flesh can't be compared to Gdansk or also to Remember one Night.

david gilmour is the reason pink floyd is the legend it is today.without those guitar licks and solos, pink floyd would have never been a superstar rock band.the lyrics that waters wrote were great,as were the arragnements, but the guitar work of gilmour trumps that easily!

Sorry, but Waters has stated that Gilmour has absolutely no interest whatsoever. Apparently, his appearance at Live8 was after a huge amount of emotional blackmail by Geldof & Bono.

I think that the best Pink Floyd was when David Gilmour, Roger Waters and Rick Wright shared their efforts together. When Waters took the overall control, the band gone down in the musical quality. For me:
Best combination: Gilmour Wright Waters
Then: Gilmour Wright
Then: Gilmour Waters
Then: Gilmour
Then: Waters
So if I must to choose, I prefer Gilmour (I prefer music over the lyrics)
