Got to say this Magazine is exccelent. I only came across it when I saw No.5 in WH Smiths. I have manged to get hold of isuues 2,3 &4 and of course have since purchased 6 & 7. I love the CD's that come with the mags, they heve put me on to whole new journey of discovery in te world of Prog. If I like a track or if there is an article in the mags highlighting a band that sounds interesting, I'm straight on Spotify looking to see if I can find more. Some of the bands I currently have on my playlists are Porcupine Tree, IQ, Mostly Autumn, Also Eden, Touchstone, Karmakanic and 2 of my favorites at the moment - Magenta & Steve Thorne. Many may have been fans of or familiar of the above but leading the sheltered life I do sometimes , I have not. So this has reawakend my love of prog.
I know there has been som critisism of issue 7 but to be honest I thought it was one of the best so far. A lot of it was given over to bands I hadnt heard of and am now in the process of checking some of them out, some of who are really good. The Peter Gabriel focus was good as I went to see him recently at the O2.
I think as a magazine published every 2 months, its perfect. If it went to monthly, they would have to do something about the price. At long last us old proggers have something to smile about .
PS AtomicCrimsonRush, Icelandic Volcanos permitting, I am flying out to Oz next week so if you are in the Perth area, I could try and grab you a copy of issue 7 (if there are any left) |
Hey thanks for the offer. I am actually a subscriber through my local newsagency and they will cry if I buy from elsewhere . btw to edit your post simply go back to your post, pull down that blind where it says post options, click on that, edit post will appear, click on that and rewrite your thesis.

I can't believe anyone on this forum could complain about this magazine. And I don't know how anyone can say they can read the whole issue in a half-hour. I find something of interest on virtually every page, including the ads. A magazine, professionally produced, full of info and photos of prog bands of all ilk, from all over, from famous to obscure -- it sounds like a dream come true for a prog fan. And it is, for this one.
For those of you who don't like it, I can't help but think of when I was younger and refused to like something solely because it was popular. Now I realize good music can be virtually ignored by the masses (most of the time) or extremely popular (though that doesn't happen very often).
To put it more bluntly. if you don't like this magazine solely because it seems to commercialize the music you love, you're a snob!!!!! What the heck do you think a professionally produced prog magazine should be likr if you think Classic Rock Presents Prog is crap?

There will be more complaints on the new issue though.......... "Sarcasm applied"
The new issue is an Emerson, Lake & Palmer special with interviews and everything you want to know about this band. In addition, you get Asia and many other bands too. That (does not) includes a twenty page prog rock scene report from Mongolia. Welcome to the show that never ends.

To each his own.... you're lucky if you can find something interesting and new on every page . I may too old for these guys to teach me something new about the bands they write about (I mean that's the band I have an interest with, not most of these UK neo-prog bands they're trying to shove our throats)..... but I don't think that's the problem really.
It's the way they skim the surface with their articles.... these guys come from Classic Rock (one of the worse offenders at how twisting the truth and turning a normal wedding into a gang bang wioth snorting Hell's Angels), which had an unwritten rule to talk about Sex & Drugs & Sex & Drugs & sex & Drugs and as little as possible about the RnR music
Well I might be snobbish.... but it's got nothing to do with CRP...P
What I don't like is the way they speak about the music (that is when they do speak of the music) and how deep their articles go into things.

Maybe I'm a snob, but thinking this mag is a big disappointment is not about that. I wish they did commercialize the music I love, but they commercialize
mostly music I can't stand. I also think should CRPP should be
about progressive rock. Progressive. Just read all of Sean's posts. .

I would like to echo Monsieur Sean Trane and add my two cents about this rag that is only out there to capitalize on the renewed interest in prog over the past 10 years. First the price. Ludicrous. Rather spend that $25 on food for my dogs or a tank of gas for the car. I'm nostalgic. I used like it when you had to hunt down an article on Yes, KC or Marillion. I only read this thing in the store when someone has ripped it open because it is too expensive. One store close to where I live just opens it and puts it on the shelf and keeps the CD behind the cash. As Rocktopus points out they glorify stuff that I really don't care for and in many cases don't even categorize as prog. Then they talk about older bands like Jethro Tull as if they have been hiding under a rock since their first album This Was. Just like our local classic rock station in Montréal CHOM FM ( a onetime great station) that I am unfortunetely exposed to from time-to-time. They'll introduce something like Pink Floyd's One Of These Days as the "lost classic".
Bottom line too much flash. Too expensive. Not for old folks from the seventies.

Well, at 25 and change bucks I dunno. What they're doing now in some places in Montréal is taking the magazine out of the cardboard box so you have to go to the cash to get the CD and the box because they kept getting torn open. I get Flight International and National Geographic in the mail at yearly rates which together come out to be cheaper than a single issue of Classic Rock Presents Prog. My local Montréal Gazette newspaper monthly subscription rate comes out to exactly $25.95. I just don't understand why a magazine has to be so bloody expensive. | Here's something I wrote in January.

As is the way in life its a case of different strokes for different folks. I say this as an old folk from the seventies . I agree that even in the UK it is dearer then it should be so can understand why people feel agrieved a paying the asking. Personly I have found this mag has given my love of prog a whole new lease of life and now find myself enjoying bands I had previously never heard of. I am still enjoying the old but my palette has ben significantly broadened by the articles and the contents of the CD's. As well as going tos the ee old estalished prog acts, I am now looking to go and see newer bands as well as some whom have been around a while but I had never heard of. Having just returned from a 3 week holiday of Singapore, Perth & Hong Kong I was delightted to find the latest issue on the shelves in WH Smith's. Havent read it yet or listend to the CD but will savour it whe I do. After that build up I do hope it isnt a dissapointment

Frankly, I picked up a copy of the newest issue from WH Smith yesterday after learning that the subscription had run out. I am not sure if I will renew the subscription if the price is not altered. I think even the subscription price is a bit stiff. The adverts (a lot of full page adds) should cover most of the cover price/costs and I have my own, pretty dark private thoughts about where my hard earned money ends up. The magazine was not that exciting though either. The ELP feature was more like a damp squid. In these recession times, my support to this magazine will have to be reconsidered.

Aside the price issue (in Continental Europe, just across the channel, the price gets almost doubled), there are a few other consideration issues that are definitely drawing me back.... and the full page adverts are not it... they're a necessary evil....
No, the writer are simply not u to wgat I'd expect. Not just are they scratching the surface ; but they lack sujects to talk about. In the previous issue, they had devoted a third of the featured pages (the central pages, where the meat is supposed to be), but in the latest issue, they fill up some 3 orv 4 more pages about ELP artwork, plus a one-page opiçcture for eacdh of the three ELP members.... talk about filling empty space
Another issue of mine, (but this is spreading to the mother mag of Classic Rock as well) is that carboard protection wallet >> aside the positive fact that it protects the mag from degradation and eventually the freebies protection, this "wallet" is sealed so you can't leaf the mag in the stores in order to avoid seeing how empty of valid articles it is >> not working for me >> i delicately open a wallet and do my deed >>> it's allowed me to pass on #7 & #8, and I'm NOT feeling guilty.
As I said, it has now contaminated the CR mag, there with even more solid reasons to exist, since they keep writing about the same hair metal ba,ns, Zep and Aerosmith in every second issue

I got mine last Friday. I found the Asia article interesting, ELP less so, good reviews as ever.
It's expensive, but I do find it worth it. It really is the only decent dedicated prog magazine around.

I currently have the Peter Gabriel issue... I enjoyed most of it as its the only prog magazine out there.. but I felt that a lot it was just a buch of filler articles... I didn't enjoy the CD very much either... a bunch of neo-sympho-prog that I'm not very fond of. I definitely will not be getting the ELP issue.

I've bought the last 3 of these mags. They are pricey, but a good read, and I've enjoyed the CD's. I'll definitely be getting the latest edition.
Prog must have a higher profile these days, than say ten or fifteen years ago. I dont remember any dedicated publications like this, in the 90's.

I've enjoyed all five issues I've bought so far. It's definitely towards the mainstream side of prog (oxymoron?) but then they presumably have to appeal to as wide an audience as possible to stay in business. To me the fact that there's a mag out there covering the historical prog bands plus the likes of Porcupine Tree, Opeth, Mars Volta et al can only be a good thing.
If people have beefs with the editorial content why not write to them with suggestions to improve it?

Even though they are expensive, I will continue to buy them. My favourite part of the mag BY FAR is Rick Wakeman's column. I think he should have his own mag.
Also, I agree with ^^ above, there's no harm in writing to the editors if there's content you would rather see. We're the customers, so I'm sure they would listen!

Well, I subscribed to the magazine. It is quite good. As with every mainstream magazine they will have to put well knows artists on the cover as that will help sell the magazine. Anyhow you can't please everyone as no matter who is featured someone will have a gripe about it.
