It's one of my favorite records, and definitely my favorite from the jazz rock genre.
 
It's pretty straight-forward jazz rock, nothing way too complex, yet there's some incredible soloing from keyboardist, Jan Hammer from the Mahavashnu Orchestra, and from guitarist, Tommy Bolin future one-time-only Deep Purple guitarist. The drumming is superb, also.
 
If you're interested you can read my review, it may give you a bit more of details. Personally, I love it and would recommend it to you only if you're looking for some catchy but well-thought instrumental jazz rock tunes with fantastic soloing and lots of groove.

By the way, is this album anything like the sample we have on Billy Cobham's artist page (http://www.progarchives.com/mp3.asp?id=4272)? I absolutely loved that song....
 
That sample is similar to Spectrum in the sense of catchiness and being straight-forward. However, that song has a very different sound, it sounds a tad bit 80-ish or at least not as earthy as Spectrum is. Also, the fact that it's dominated by saxes that is another notable difference, Spectrum is a bit more "cooled-down" and dominated by guitar and electric keyboards rather than saxes.


Thanks for the info Pablo... I might have to check out some Billy Cobham. I've been liking more "funky" and jazzy stuff lately. That Magma album (especially the first track) got me even more interested in finding funky stuff! LOL

^that sounds great! And yes, 'The Last Seven Minutes' is really funky and damn incredible!
 
Some other albums you might want to consider buying:
 
Blow by Blow by Jeff Beck: it's a classic jazz rock instrumental album with again pretty simply rhythms but they're very catchy and funky, and as you should know, the guitar playing is outstanding.
 
Enigmatic Ocean by Jean-Luc Ponty: less straight-forward jazz rock, there's a bit more elaboration in the compositions, but the funky factor is not omitted. Plus, the line-up couldn't be better, and now that you're much of a Zappa fan you may be even more interested.
 
Headhunters by Herbie Hancock: the jazz funk record by essence. You can't get funkier than this; extremely catchy grooves and solos. Again, nothing really complex as, say Mahavishnu Orchestra or Return to Forever.
Well, thinking twice, Hancock's Thrust is pretty much as funky as Headhunter, and I would say that it's better, but perhaps it's too jazzy for you.
