Noise, not so much. I'm still exploring the electroacoustic/noise thing, so I can only really give you a list of people that are famous that I've heard Youtube clips of. But if you're feeling brave, go ahead and buy Merzbow's 1930 or Kevin Drumm's Sheer Hellish Miasma. I haven't, but you'll get props from me for going for it.
I can, however, talk about free jazz for quite a while, although I have to confess my actual physicall collection is somewhat limited as I don't have a lot of cash to spend. Albert Ayler Live at Greenwich Village (Spiritual Unity is his really famous one, but I like Greenwich Village more, and it's also more accessible because he has a whole brass band playing the themes so there's more textural variety, but they mostly stay out of the way for the soloing so you don't get the Machine Gun cacophany effect so much), Ornette Coleman's Free Jazz, Coltrane's A Love Supreme/Ascension, and Peter Brotzmann's Machine Gun are all essential IMO. They might be too much for you, especially Brotzmann, but I love him and Evan Parker. Pharoah Sanders, Andrew Hill, Sun Ra, Eric Dolphy, and Cecil Taylor are famous on the American side and, depending on their work, are probably more accessible. If you're a metal fan, John Zorn's Six Litanies for Helioglabus was one of the albums that got me to realize the power of high pitched screaming. It's not really free jazz, but it's great. I actually was a Masada/John Zorn and Albert Ayler fan before I was a fan of regular jazz, it's kind of funny. The Shape of Jazz to Come is of course the most famous avant-garde jazz album ever besides A Love Supreme (even Ken Burns deigned to mention it on Jazz), but you're not going to hear much of the avant-garde on Shape. It was revolutionary for starting to detach jazz from the bebop conventions established by Charlie Parker, but it's fairly inoffensive to modern ears. It's still great, and worth hearing, but don't expect to hear anything as abusive as Machine Gun.

Tee hee... I'm just playing really. It's always pleasing to see people taking an interest in this area of music, even if our tastes clash a little. Don't know who GX Jupitter Larsen is, FWIW ;) BTW, did I see a couple of post from yours truly at I Hate Music a couple of months back? Some people here know my adoration of Sheer Hellish Miasma so I can only second that recommendation. I became utterly obsessed by it's density back a couple of years ago, I loved the way it deconstructed my speakers to the point of collapse. The extent of this infatuation resulted my first copy snapping in half while playing from overuse. Another two discs I might suggest are Pita's Get Out, one of the first noise albums done on laptop, it was really defining in that direction. The other is something a little more recent, Jason Crumer Ottoman Black, really intelligently piece together, he has a contemplative mien, which suits a more compositional structure. Great variance in dynamics. Merzbow is a whole other monster, another thread would be more appropriate for that type of discussion. I've refrained from recommending anything overly harsh. |

By the way, where did Dave Kerman's "Tel Aviv Construction Events 1-3 go?" It was on his site for download a year and a bit ago, but now it seems to have disappeared, it isn't even listed on ReR USA. Anyone got a idea? I was about to buy it but then I hesitated, and now I cannot find it . |

Nah, I'm really no authority on the UK stuff. My knowledge of noise really stops at Japanese and small proportions of US. The latter has so many sub-cultures/scene based on cities that it becomes ridiculously hard to keep uptodate with the innumerable tapes release day by day. I think in this case, it would be far more exciting to be involved in the scene than dedicating hours of listening time. EAI on the other hand... replying to what is in bold: I like this mind-state, to me this is a portion of have avant-garde music is about. I saw John Wiese live two years ago now, in the basement of Sound 323 in London, playing with Mark Wastell. It was a little like chalk and cheese and there was some sound problems, but I worked ok. Wiese has a broad sound palette, but appeared a little too much, interesting sound followed by another interesting sound, without much in-between. It amassed a nice catalogue of sound but nothing much more of me. Anyway I'm digressing down a totally different kettle of fish so I'll pull in the reins. KK null's band Absolut Null Punkt might be worthwhile listening to some samples, but from memory your not the biggest fan of drum's?? (or am I thinking of someone else?) Maybe, we could start up another thread in the general music discussion if you were interested in continuing such discussions? As I feel like I'm derailing this thread with random interjections. |

Well noted, on the Nazca that is. I've not had a decent dose of bassoon-age in ages; possibly time to replace my 'files'! Re: Breton, maybe your frequenting the wrong forums ;) I've just convinced a good friend to pick up some of his work. |

I've got the remaster of Nivraym, I've heard the original and the remaster is much better IMO. I love the addition of Komori Keiko on soprano sax/ bass clarinet.

Just bought it! Thanks again Udi! The wonders of the Internet :) Now, I'm listening to it, two minutes later :=) Very interesting liner notes on the site, by the way. It's always fun to read how a track came into being. I will comment on this after hearing the album through. Didn't know that you were involved in the process too, Udi, very interesting indeed! Was this album ever realeased in a physical form, by the way, or it just a downloadable album?

My review's finally up, after several listens. I gave it a pretty high score. Hopefully I do a reasonable job of articulating why, after being so down on other free improv albums. Edited by Trouserpress - April 23 2010 at 13:20 |

I was browsing the Internet Archive today and found an AWESOME 5-CD anthology of the netlabel Clinical. Clinical is a broad netlabel covering experimental/avant-garde music. It's free streaming and downloads (scroll down the page). There's a bunch of stuff that should interest the casual avant-gardist.
Anyway, check it out. All of the artists on the anthology also have free downloads of their full albums on IA. I think Zach Kouns, Pigeons and the Insane Porridgemakers, Subterminal and Orchestra Popular de Paio Pires are extremely talented. Enjoy! Edit: They broke down the genres they cover by disc. CD1 - Other (pretty eclectic) CD2 - Electronic CD3 - Ambient CD4 - Jazz/Avant-Garde CD5 - Other (also very eclectic) Edited by SolariS - April 24 2010 at 19:25 |
