I still have to acquire that one.

I can only assume you'd like it, I know I do. It's very quotable. LOL

Yes, musically it is a great album as well. I don't know how to describe it though, I don't have the necessary knowledge.

It's Depeche Mode; it has to be good.

so far, I'm liking And Their Refinement. Very spacey, though I'm not sure I can take two full CD's worth of this kind of thing- Aphex Twin's SAW2 has some nice beat-oriented tracks and interesting effects, any of that here?

So I made my "5 favorite bands" list on Facebook, simply because I haven't attempted to make a list like that in a long time. It came out like this:

1. Rush
2. Henry Cow
3. Kraftwerk
4. Bela Fleck and the Flecktones
5. Boards of Canada

Currently:

1. Tortoise
2. Pink Floyd
3. Radiohead
4. Can
5. Yes/Animal Collective/Kraftwerk

Great list.

Hard to be sure of, as always. My opinion of Tortoise may be heavily biased, considering I am completely addicted right now. Pink Floyd, though incredibly brilliant, I never listen to at all anymore. Radiohead is pretty solid, as is Can. Yes I never listen to anymore either, and all their classics have sorta lost their luster for me. Animal Collective is great, but they too have exited my normal listening tendencies. As for Kraftwerk they're definitely up there, but like Tortoise, they have no magnum opus album- no DSOTM/Animals or Kid A/OK Computer or Strawberry Jam to conclusively justify their lofty placement.

or we could just say that all rating/ranking is futile and leave it at that. Let's.

I know how you feel.

I still really need to hear Tortoise. They're one of the highest ones on my list right now.

Djed from the 96er, TNT from TNT, and Seneca are a good Tortoise crash course.

Will do.

VDGG have some of the most laughable lyrics I've ever heard in my entire life.

I usually don't find lyrics that bother me that way, but somehow alot of their songs rub me the wrong way like that. They're so bad. Then again, that's my opinion.

I'm not sure whether you're saying that to attempt to troll me or whether you seriously think that.

How you could put him above Peter Gabriel I'll never know.

I like both, so I don't know. I still say Waters is my favorite though.

On the topic of VDGG, I'm split. Sometimes the lyrics are very good, sometimes they sound overly poetic. Sometimes the instrumentation is catchy and enjoyable, sometimes they get mired in blah. However, I gave H to He 4 stars, though I cannot say the same for Pawn Hearts- somewhere between 2 and 3 for this listener. Godbluff was somewhere between the two, though I've only heard it on youtube, and I'm not yet qualified to make opinions on any others. Just my 3 pesos.

Waters and Modest Mouse's Isaac Brock are tied for my best lyricist.

I don't particularly find Waters an amazing lyricist either, so it just comes down to taste.

He is miles better than Hammill, but for my preference that says hardly anything.

That statement was partly to troll you, but its also what I really think.  Peter Gabriel is fantastic too, of course.

My opinions on lyrics are perhaps different than most people's anyway. I find myself more and more drawn to instrumental music over the past year or two and hardly find myself paying a whole lot of attention to lyrics anymore. Vocals have become so much of just another instrument to me that over half the time I don't care to hear what is actually being said.

Now Gabriel is a very respectable lyricist, especially once he went solo and found his poetic spirit. I will 100% support you there.

I just can't find any of Hammill's lyrics to have any redeeming quality whatsoever, they're completely unrelatable and come across as forced and contrived to me.
