With the email you will all have received from Maxime Roy announcing a sister site to Progarchives covering metal music, may I suggest that all forms of prog metal currently on this site be moved to the new site? I ask because I feel that this site, which has always been a valuable resource for discovering new progressive musics, has over recent years become increasingly dominated by the myriad forms of prog metal to the detriment of other forms of prog.
I feel a split would freshen up this site, and give the new site a good start. I have nothing against metal musics, it's just not my cup of tea, as you might have guessed! I appreciate that metal is highly popular, and good on Maxime for starting a separate site, but surely if things remain as they are on this site there will be a lot of unecessary duplication.
I will now lie back to receive the inevitable verbal lashing.  |

I see youre point but many of the progressive metal bands like DT, Ayreon, Symphonire X and so on are important prog bands of the 90s
but on the other hand if this site focuses on the ROCK part of Prog and MMA focus is on the Metal side of Rock, it is a logical suggestion

Once a band is added it cannot be removed, regardless of genre. Unless the site owners changed policy, I would prefer the site to stay as is

Somebody already suggested this. It's still silly. You don't have to read the threads about Dream Theater and Porcupine Tree, and to omit them is to ignore the direction that prog has taken (whether you want it to or not).

I would also prefer the site to stay the way it is. If prog metal is dominating the discussions, then it is down to those who wish to discuss other sub genres to start and promote fresh threads accordingly.
Also, why stop at prog metal? Why not set up sister sites for anything prog related; Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel, Squarepusher et al, and keep PA for prog purists only. Whatever that means..
The apparent dominance of prog metal - not my favourite sub genre - is actually a good thing for progressive music as a whole, as it draws in a younger audience, who in turn discover the classic prog bands through their love of prog metal. Why should PA members have to flit between two sites to discuss two different types of strongly related music?

No.
If there's musical site for the genre A and for the genre B (and perhaps in the future for the genres C, D, E), it's logical they will overlap to a degree.
We collect prog. MMA collects metal. You won't find ELP there. You won't find AC/DC here. Dream Theater is on both.
Following the same logic, someone on MMA can say: let's get rid of the prog metal, it's on PA anyway, let the MMA be a place for pure metal without keyboards.
Simple as that.

No offense to Original Poster, but Metal is something we don't have to fear. Yes, MetalArchives are MOSTLY for Metal with little bit of Rock. Well, this site is not about Rock (not just about Rock), it's about Prog and this means electronic, jazz, rock, metal, you name it.
Even most things are and will be Rock.

Funnily enough my fave band at the mo is Porcupine Tree - The Incident live was stunning - but I wouldn't have described them as metal as Henry suggests, merely metal influenced in parts. My points would relate more to bands in the Tech/Extreme metal genre, a lot of which have far more in common with the development of metal than prog, imo.
It's that old chestnut "how does one define prog". And yes Henry, my post is a bit silly, that was the point!  |

This is controversial for sure, but I partly agree with topic starter Starless. I don't dislike metal, but I'm not very interested either.
My thought are as following: most of the site is generated automatically every time you access it. You see the latest reviews, the latest discussion topics, the hot bands of yesterday, etc. Since all these element are variable, wouldn't it be possible to make a feature (like a button) that excludes all metal bands from the new reviews, hot bands lists and the PA top 100 etc. This shouldn't be impossible, and everybody would still be happy!

Prog Metal lead me to this site. This site lead me to other prog. Which lead me to enjoy and appreciate music of most forms. I don't think that would have happened had it not been a part of this site. I know its not that way for everyone, but generally, the site works best when it represents prog as a whole. If this happened, chances are eventually it would only lead to different sites for all the various sub genres and make this site irrelevant (and none of the other sites would be as useful)
Besides, its up to the sites owner. And I don't think it'll happen anyway.

So groups like Dream Theater and Pain Of Salvation would vanish from this site? It's horribly horrible! Any newbie complexity-maniacs will enjoy when they found Dream Theater.. And for advanced brainstormers, will be poor if they're not listen to POS's (especially BE) conceptual albums.
By no means other classics like Gentle Giant's complex music or Yes' concepts were bad, but experiencing it on louder (well, metal) music will be astonishing!

No they wouldn't - like I said earlier my point is more aimed at bands in the Tech/Extreme metal genre, not so much Prog Metal bands.

Some bands, especially in the Progressive Metal and Experimental/Post Metal genres belong to both Prog and Metal because these genres are not strictly separated from each other. Maybe the few bands in the Tech/Extreme Prog Metal genre that can be called prog without too much goodwill could be moved to one of these genres (I can imagine Opeth in Progressive Metal) and the remainder put on a one-way traffic road to MMA.
