It's not profit what drives their "business" to call it like that. It's a service. Of course, surpluses at year's end are better than deficits in said schools budgets, but making a profit is not their goal. That should be evident.

"profit" is an interesting idea-- Richard Nixon always said he never 'profited' from his work in government, which as a lawyer he meant he'd never earned more than what he'd worked for.. so to him, profit meant something significantly beyond an established payment for services

I don't know if the Obama plan is the best, but no one else offered anything different than the status quo. Obama is the only one who stepped up to the plate and made something different happen.
To throw up unproven platitudes like 'if it is run by the government it must be bad' is just nonsense. If our government is so inept, how did we end up with about the best military in the world. |

Again, that doesn't address the issue. Look at what you said, and why I said "providing a service costs money." Doctors must go through at least three times the schooling as teachers, plus teachers don't have to pay for their own practice, insurance, staff, and other expenditures. Under Obama's plan, heath care will still be expensive. It's just that those who don't need / want it have to pay for it. You mention school budgets and say "making a profit is not their goal." Now you bring education into it. I am in favor of privatized education. |

Because of government-run programs, John! Oh wait, no. Because of corporations who have government contracts, like http://www.lockheedmartin.com/ |

Wrong again Rob, our military is not run by Lockheed, it is run by the government of the USA. |

John, I swear, you should run for president with that slogan ("WRONG AGAIN ROB!"), but look carefully here. The government runs the military yes, but were it not for private corporations, they would not have the best fighter jets, for example, to make them great. Men with swords and horses won't cut it anymore. |

Corporations build their tools for war. But they don't run nor do they decide when to go to war. (At least we hope so, though that's uncertain...) Anyway, throwing 30 trillion dollars in useless wars seems like much more of a waste of money than doing so in a health care reform... (I know, I digress... I just thought of it...)

Yes, and our brave new medical world will have needles and thermometers and crazy trick reclining beds and drugs and lots of other neat stuff made by private companies, but calling the shots will be our elected officials headed by our Commander-in-Chief, the same folks who call the shots in the military. So the legislature and the President will get to decide if my hemorrhoids get repaired or not. Nice. (Interesting how you don't mention what role the judicial system will play in fixing up my colon...) |

Lets take this further, did anyone else come up with an idea to save us from price gouging at the hands of the insurance industry? Something actually workable that our elected officials felt strongly enough about to vote for? |
