I wish to build a JAZZ PA-like site soon and maybe "classical" or "electronic".

The goal is not to SPLIT PA in multiples sites, not at all.

Just to create other PA-like music community/archive based site. For fun.

Still PA.... you turn me on Rawks

Well I think the new Metal website is a good idea, but it seems a lot of people now suggest individual sites for Electronic, Avant-Garde, AOR etc etc. Before we know it every genre - Symphonic, RIO, Crossover etc will all be suggested. Seems crazy that's all especially when you can already do this seperately in each genre right here on Prog ArchivesConfused
I hear what you're saying Chris, but the whole Electronic Music genre is under-represented here (and elsewhere on the Internet) since Electronic Prog excludes Electro-Accoustic, Experimental Electronic, Electronica, New Age, Synth-Pop, Techno, IDM, EBM, Darkwave, I could keep going, but look at this list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_electronic_music_genres  - of which Electronic Prog (and a bit of JR/F) covers the the smallest percentage. It would be a brave and bold move to create a site that links all forms of electronic music, just as the PA links all forms of Progressive Music.

But PA isn't about all forms of Progressive Music, it's focus is on Progressive Rock.  Heck, it doesn't even represent, at least not well, modern styles such as Progressive Electronic Dance Music/ Progressive House....

How many reviews before we have charts? Probably already asked but I didn't read the entire thread.

You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

Dean, I guess it is one way of breaking the PA shackles of being too exclusive at times. Without question I bet the number of PA users will in time decline unless we send some missionaries out into cyberspace to get more converts. Still just my opinion and a wish that PA was more inclusive.
So there is hope elsewhere for ECM artists, Tori Amos, Talking Heads, Stratovarious, Grate Dead etc. as these splinter sites unfold.

wise man Chris...Clap  I have long thought a particular problem was that the site is NOT a prog ROCK site.. it stopped being that years ago with various additions to the site from across the progressive 'non-rock' spectrum..any glace at the database is enough to see that.   yet some here hold on to that nature, in the decisions to add or not add... which does not make the site  'exclusive'... but something else. .. arbitrary is the best...  inflammatory word I can come up with.  In fact, though no great loss.. just giving an observation..that more than anything is what drove me away from working for the site.   Having to go through brick walls for the simple matter of adding an artist to archival site...   that shouldn't be as difficult as has become...  I think the site forgot who this site was for... not us and our progendas... but the people out there.

And better yet, I'm officially a n00b again, and more n00bie than when I joined this site to boot!  Oops, seems I'm already a groper at the site. :(

Incidentally, that board is so much easier on my eyes than this one.  I love the layout of the place generally -- in general, I actually prefer the site in terms of features and aesthetically to PA.

Perceptive post certainly but I don't recall reading too many proposed scenarios. Given that the new site does have a Prog Metal category, (which I've always considered a sub genre of metal anyway not Progressive Rock) is there a sufficiently strong case at this point to continue to have the following sub genres
listed on PA ?

Experimental/Post Metal
Progressive Metal
Tech/Extreme Prog Metal

These are unequivocally genres of Metal and for all intents and purposes (reductio ad absurdum), could sit quite happily as 'Prog Related' on PA Wink

There was a thread fairly recently that exposed the idea of Prog Metal being a gateway to the broader realm of Progressive Rock as a hollow myth with precisely zero substance. Ergo, what type of visitors and music fans does PA wish to continue to attract ?

BTW Yes, I am biased cos I like metal like a tooth loves drills Embarrassed but despite what you may infer, I am trying to be objective about this y'all.

I'd agree progmetal is, or was, a subgenre of metal, and also I'd agree someone is less likely to get into progmetal via prog--  but the reverse seems more possible, no?:  a metalhead who likes progmetal and eventually prog rock in some form.

I don't see a problem. The reviews across both sites will be different as the PA reviews should have a Prog bias and I would imagine that the MMA reviews will have a Metal bias. It may reduce the volume of PM bands added here as the bulk of the eval/additions effort will be put into the metal site, but I see no reason/point in scrapping PM from here completely. Prog Metal will always be Prog to me.

If it hadn't been for metal I would never have discovered prog.

And I have read about so many ppl starting out with DT and similar bands and through them discovering the progressive rock giants that for my sake any discussion trying to belittle that specific impact sounds moot, hollow and false.

This is exactly what is happening. I have posted a few of my reviews on MMA, and edited them in order to make them more suitable for a metal site. As to the suggestion of scrapping prog-metal altogether, I don't believe it would be fair, and would definitely make PA look backward in comparison with other prog sites. Additionally, I don't really think eliminating PM would increase the amount of interesting discussions on 'real' prog on the site.

I agree - PM may not be my favorite sub-genre, but there is definitely a place for it here; after all, I'd say a majority of prog recorded at the moment is probably PM based

A 'prog bias' would only be required/countenanced if the artist was either in Prog Related, Proto or at a pinch Crossover surely ?

Perish the thought that I infer something that you ain't implied but are you saying that you consider all the metal sub genres on PA as not 'real' prog ? If so, then what are they doing here ? (or is PA perhaps guilty of just 'keeping up with the Joneses' as you state ?)

Apologies for being so abrasive (I'm old and Scottish, a deadly cocktail) but despite Max's protestations to the contrary earlier in the thread, this new website represents for me, a tacit admission that the 3 metal sub genres on PA have no business being there (even post/math rock is borderline IMO) and are probably the source of some of the fiercest and infantile bickering that has on occasion sullied/energised the forums.
(Apart from the arguments I start obviously Wink)
