Quote from The Science Fiction Encyclopedia ed. by Peter Nicholls (1979):

"With SF motifs pervading certain strata of popular music, SF and fantasy art has made formidable appearances on record album sleeves.  Here the name of Roger Dean commes immediately to mind; his striking compositions of machine, insect, animal and bone have convincing power."

I've tried this topic before, many moons ago, but didn't get much response, so I'll try again.  Dean aside, who are the best prog album cover artists (for artwork, not photography)?  Aside from Dean, Rodney Matthews, Patrick Woodroffe and Dave Rowe usually get my vote.

Isnt Thorgersons work usually photographic?

Any way, Travis Smith is excellent.

Paul Whitehead, hands down. He illustrated at least three of  the greatest prog albums of all time! Pawn Hearts, Nursery Cryme, and Foxtrot....not to mention Fools Mate, and the sadly lost Shaun Guerin albums.
He is the illustrator of my growing up years....gotta soft spot for his stuff!

Photography can be considered art.

I think my favourite album cover is ALPHATAURUS' debut, especially when you open up the gate fold sleeves and see the whole thing.Incredible ! I don't know who did it though.

I just read Andrea's review of this album and he says it was a painting done by Adriano Marangoni. And come to think of it there are a number of album covers that are from actual paintings.

Mark Wilkinson has done many album covers, especially for Marillion.

Jef Bertels gets a vote for me.  He does the Ayreon artwork, which I think is rather stellar.

I thought photography was an art. I think the OP meant hand drawn artwork.

Peter Cross did some fine work for Anthony Phillips
I never post anything anywhere without doing more than basic research, often in depth.

Mark Wilkinson did Marillion's early albums and Fish's solo albums, some of his are amazing:

Toby Driver from Kayo Dot has also made some amazing art:

H.R. Gigiers cover for ELP's Brain Salad Surgery is amazing. It's only one cover, but it is one of the all time classics.

I have a particular liking for the work of Jeff Jordan, who did the covers for the last three Mars Volta albums. Though I understand it can be a bit of an acquired taste, I find his brightly-coloured, surrealistic style very intriguing.

I totally agree! I've got a vinyl reissue with the double gate fold sleeves and the work looks amazing! The colors are better then on the PA preview.

For those interested in the Roger Dean artwork, in this site you can find a nice collection, they are downloadable and in a size and resolution good enough for wallpaper.
(it's not me who put them there)

Despite how much I dislike the music of Mastodon, these done by Paul Romano are some of the best 00's cover artwork I've ever seen.
