Lady GaGa's latest music video, which is really more of a short film, is quite bizarre. It's also one of the most explicitly PG-13 things on Youtube, with a nearly naked GaGa, brief profanity, and LESBIANS.
The 'Ga claims to be bisexual, so the LESBIANS shouldn't surprise anybody, but we are still left with one of the strangest music videos I've ever seen from a major label. So I ask you, what does it mean?
The first options are based on this blog post, and I admit that the main reason I made this thread was to share this link. He has a whole series of these things, and they're all fantastic, as is the whole blog. But you all know how I feel about crazy people, so you may not agree.
The second set is based on an essay question somebody on another forum got in his Music and Gender class
The last set is obvious.
Personally, I'm fairly certain that it doesn't really mean anything, at least in the sense of subverting stereotypes to advance the cause of feminism blah blah blah; however, I do think that at least some of the things our Vigilant Citizen is talking about are intentional. Ga has this weird ironic thing going on with her popularity that is very annoying, but commenting on mass media seems to be something she does quite frequently, even while indulging in the very things she pretends to dislike. And strange occult imagery has resonating power, so I imagine some of that that is deliberate as well.
Also, The Blonde Lady has a total of over 1 billion views on Youtube. Fame can buy you a lot of things!
Also, this is the very first thread about Lady GaGa on PA, so I bet it's going to be great. If you don't post in this thread, you can't complain about repeat topics! Edited by Henry Plainview - March 25 2010 at 02:02 |

Henry, you have far too much free time.
Also, Post-Feminism, because that's the kind of psuedo-intellectual bullsh*t that keeps people on their toes. Or it is just drivel. |

While I skipped ahead at times, I do recommend watching at least part of it. Is this what pop music is becoming? Should we be concerned about that? There's always been very strange thematic choices (I've watched that video 10-20 times and I'm still not sure what's going on), but this seems to be taking things to a new level.
Also, I should be clear: the metaphor I am referring to is the (perceived) unthinking, passive nature of pop culture/mass media. So GaGa is talking about about Americans being hypnotized, not being hypnotized herself. This is not to insult anyone, but I've found that things that are obvious in my head aren't always clear to everybody else. Edited by Henry Plainview - March 25 2010 at 02:19 |

Post-Feminism, you don't need to know the specifics of what it means, just the fact that it refutes some feminist claims, while pushing others. In other words, nothing that vanilla Feminism can't describe in a more succint manor. I've seen the video on a music TV channel, I was too apathetic to watch the whole thing. At least it's not deadly dull. |

I'd vote for options 5 & 7 combined. I was also perplexed when I first saw it.
Too bad the music is awful. I mean, is this really the new Thriller? Thriller was a nice track that I liked even without the video. Same goes for a lot of successful pop before the last era of commercialism that started in the mid 90s. |

Cross between 4 and 7, but as for one word to define the whole 10 minutes: ROFL.

That essay question is crap that's just a prof. reading into pop culture, a necessarily mindless entity, with pathetic intelli-speak.
The song is less than 4 minutes long, and they repeated it a lot in the video. It had good parts, and it's pretty catchy. I felt like the video was trying too hard and ended up being kind of dumb. The thing is, I like GaGa's whole attitude and persona. She reminds me of a mix of characters from the Fifth Element and Blade Runner time traveling back to us to troll everyone. |

Well, I have consistently come out in defense of Lady Gaga's music, which I think is remarkably good pop,a dn I think this is a remarkably good video. There's a lot of controversy about it being offensive, but I think that is a bit silly. It's no more offensive than anything else out there. Should kids be watching it? No. But kids see lots of things they shouldn't and I think the impact on their fragile little minds is overstated.
What does it mean? Nothing, I think. It's eye candy and ear candy, with a Tarantino sensibility. Why does everything have to mean something? |

Me too. Still voted 'boobs' because I'm shallow. But on a more serious note, I agree that for a pop artist she is fairly good, not to mention the fact that she writes her own songs, which is a plus in my book. However, I find the video a bit too ostentatious. One can make a point in a different way. I understand she is eccentric and an artist but the line between eccentric art and poor taste is very thin. I don't agree with the mentality: if everybody else does it, why shouldn't I do it? |

I went with option #1 because I am convinced that she is one of David Icke's infamous "Lizard People" who are in cahoots with the Illuminati and President Barry Hussein Sombrero Fartbama to take over the world and enslave all of humanity.
/watched about the first minute and a half to two minutes of the vid before it just became too freakin weird - didn't even get to the song, but if it's as obnoxious as "Pokerface" and "Paparazzi", then I'm not missing much

Didn't knew Lady Gaga was this hawt. Her face sucks, but she has a great body.
On a side note, why is her vagoo cencored in this video? I only noticed it was uncovered due to the pixels and why the hell she had to show it if it would be cencored anyway? God, I sure hate that controversy that is not controverted culture that Madonna invented in the 80s.
