Really, Jim, it's outrageous...LOL
I just found out that Albergo Intergalattico Spaziale's early demos have been released as a CD in 2009 with the title "Angeli di Solitudine", feat. Franco Battiato...by a certain Giallo Records/Crotalo indie label that I cannot find on the web!
How odd is that, a label with no website? Anyone know something about this?

OK, PA Italian fans!

Periodically, I like to report on bands that have been added to the database, either by the RPI team or another team.  This list only includes ones that have come through the RPI team at some point, there are certainly other Italian additions which are not included here, such as metal bands that went straight through the PM team.  This is not meant to be a list of every recent addition, just some key ones that I personally am familiar with.

The point is just to introduce them to readers who may not have noticed them so far, or as a reminder to check out.  Enjoy.  I linked them for convenience.  Apologies to those I missed.  Thanks to Linus and Todd my fellow team mates and also Raff, Andrea, Olav, and other collabs who have worked to increase the presence of Italian prog artists through additions, and to those who write the reviews!
Clap

Architrave Indipendente: One of the most interesting takes on classic RPI, from a bunch of very nice guys who are huge analog fans.  Their album is proudly served up on vinyl and will fascinate many fans.  Quite recommended.

Lucio Battisti:  After epic discussion and consideration among many people over years, Italy's legendary favorite son is finally at ProgArchives as a "prog-related" artist.  Most recommend his classic "Anima Latina" to prog fans, while earlier albums are more song based and later ones venturing into sophisticated, electronic pop with crossover appeal.

Cormorano
:  Area-lite I suppose you could say.  The vocalist is a Stratos devotee obviously.

Laser: A super obscure RPI gem, I personally love this little album.  Not for everyone, but if interested in the minor players check out my review for details.

Altare Thotemico - One of 2009's most exciting RPI releases, these guys are wild, gregarious players and unapologetically passionate about music.  Hang onto your hats.  Kudos to Maracash for this band.

Mario Cottarelli - A wonderful solo composer who wrote this suite in the 70s but was only able to record it recently.  I love it.  This album is for the keyboard fan as it is wall to wall keys from a superb player.

Barock Project - Exciting new group that thrills most folks who hear them.

Side C - Rookie band whose first 4-song demo can be heard for free at their myspace.  Check it out and give them some feedback.  Bold female vocals and interesting players.

Mario Panseri - A composer and keyboardist who released a lovely soft-prog suite in 1973.   The album has just been reissued as a Japanese mini-lp CD and while pretty obscure, most people who hear the album love it.

Nicosia & C - Not added yet, but coming very soon.  Amazing and unique take on RPI with a huge brass presence, slightly similar to but less aggressive than Officina Meccanica, they are more laid back and sometimes jazzy, but very interesting stuff.  I loved it on the first play.

Alma Sideris - Another project from Gus Pasini of Corte Aulica fame.

Il Babau - I can't remember, might have posted them before, but in any case, great stuff blending modern sound with classic feel.  For the adventurous.

Jim, your updates are very helpful.  I have a couple comments regarding the availability of these albums.

Architrave Indipendente has agreed with Greg Walker/Synphonic to sell CD-R copies of their album along with the vinyl, if that's impeded anyone from purchasing their album.

Also, the Mario Panseri album Adolescenza has been lauded in several circles as being among the great RPI albums.  If you're interested, act quickly, because the Japanese minis are the first time the album has been available on CD (and back in print for decades!)--but as with all the Japanese minis, they're only printed once!

Todd, thanks for that, I didn't remember that Greg was doing that with AI.  That's great!  Now the vinyl thing need not stop anyone.

Yeah, I was really glad to hear that too.  Greg contacted them and told them that people would say, "Yeah, I'd love to hear it but I don't do vinyl."  So the band agreed to send CD-Rs to be sold along with a copy of the vinyl.  Hopefully that will get things going for them, because their album is stunning.

Mario Cottarelli is great! I got his album from the artist himself, and we exchanged emails. It seems his brother also lives here in DC, since he works at the International Monetary Fund (where also one of my students works). I was really impressed by the album, which has very interesting lyrics and vocals as well as excellent keyboards.

Thaks Todd and Andrea for the links, I'm an awful googler apparently ;-)
I see that Crotalo also sells Cottarelli, N.Y.X.'s first album, Saro Cosentino+Di Martino.

Since we're talking of Albergo Intergalattico Spaziale, I know that Mino di Martino is still working on many projects, but does anyone know what has been of his wife, Edda "Terra" Di Benedetto, the (really good) singer? Same googling problem as above, I cannot seem to find any info about her.

Any one have a bead on how soon, what day!!, Greg Walker's store will carry the new RRR?  A friend wants to know.

Why must my spell-checker continually underline the word "prog"?

Nice to be back.  Didn't see it in his catalog when I checked last night, and just looked again now.  I have the right link, don't I?

Greg's catalog isn't always updated immediately upon him getting stuff in.

He has it though, got mine from him last week.

Topi o Uomini
Flea Rock Progressivo Italiano

Review by Sean Trane
Special Collaborator Prog-Folk Specialist

4 stars 4.5 stars mainly on the excitement that this guitar-driven proto-prog-rock that is developed here. Flea is the second album of this band that recorded three albums with the same line-up but changed names.

Generally Italian bands are not remembered for guitar heroics but in this one and on Garibaldi's Nuda, this is like a guitar overdose but in the positive way. We are not in a typically prog format, although the longer tracks allowing for much musical interplay and the sheer musical abilities from the participants especially the drummer and the guitarist.

Side 1 has a side-long title track that is halfway into a long jam and a prog number including many lengthy but outstanding solos. The feeling is somewhere between Lard Free's debut and Black Sabbath's first two albums and you can feel the almost violent enthusiasm of the guys . It sure feels good. Exhilaration is around the bend....

Side 2 is made from three mid-length tracks, the first of which is probably the most prog in construction and the following one giving on a peek at their calmer/softer side. The final track is a great return towards the opening track and making you regret that this album is so short. The vocals, I would qualify as typically Italian can surprise with this high-powered rock but certainly do not shock: in fact they are fairly appropriate.

As I said above, this album is not that prog in terms of the usual/conventional definitions developed on all sides but is more than linked to it by sheer virtuosity and an almost Ramone-like enthusiasm that makes this album a 70's gem etiquette that should be discovered urgently by all progheads. Exhilarating and almost orgasmic.....

Ignore the "youtube sound quality" issues, and if the music intrigues you, check out their CD!

Their rather good.

On a side note, I always wonder about singers in prog bands, when they don't also play an instrument, looking for something to do during instrumental sections while playing live.  It's very accepting of the apparent 'rules' of prog, kind of sweetly funny; you see it with this singer, toward the end he's just mussing his hair, and looking as if he might sing again (though he doesn't) just probably to keep the audiences attention - or to not be so rude as to walk away ("well, I can see I'm not needed here...").  LOL
