I don't know, I'm fairly open when it comes to music. I like just about everything. Jazz, rock, pop, classical, prog, new age, celtic, etc etc. My best friend, who is 50 by the way, loves Dream Theater. Funny, I know a whole load of musicians and not one of them save for a couple like the band. They refer to them as noisy musical masturbators. To me the band leans toward being complicated for the sake of being complicated. I don't like the band and I've listened to lots of their music because my buddy adores them. Try as I might, I can't get my head around them. This means nothing though in terms of whether or not the band deserves 'legendary' status. Time will tell of course, but for me they are not progressive in terms of so called art rock. I do think that they are progressive in terms of heavy metal music and of course have major appeal to musicians and individuals that find their music attractive and this will undoubtably if not already raise their stock in this regard for that particular style of music. So, yes, legends of progressive metal music for sure.

I have many DVDs and everything worhtwhile they released on CD. I have to say they rarely disappoint and are as good as it gets - all virtuoso musicians and influential - essential to prog. Quintessential even!
 In sum, LEGENDS!!!!

Rant over....

I'm a big DT fanboy, but I might agree with you. PT are in their own league apart from DT in terms of songwriting. DT are technically more proficient musicians, but Steve Wilson writes better melodies.
Hello, mirror. So glad to see you, my friend. It's been a while...

DT are in a very odd position. LOTS of prog-heads dislike them, generally citing what fancypants cheeseballs they are, yet will at the same time willingly concede that they are giants of modern prog and will go down in the history books. Usually people aren't willing to say that of groups they dislike- I suppose it's a sign of the respect, even if grudging, that DT have earned through their contribution to prog.

Mike Portnoy alone is a legend! Everything he is involved in from Steve Morse ,to Transatlantic, DT and LTE are phenomenal contributions to prog...

What many don't get is that DT are not a Heavy Metal band. They are a band who uses a lot of Heavy Metal in a lot of their music. They also use plenty of other genre styles and techniques as well.
DT are prog rock albeit a 21st century capable prog rock band who use 21st century techniques etc.

I put it onto the table that anyone who cannot see DT's value, contribution to music or skill does not have a comprehension of prog music. Note that I never said "anyone who does not like DT............."
I dislike KC's music but I would never try to detract from their importance as a major progressive act in the past, inflentual even on today's music. To detract in that regard, in any way, would show my ignorance or lack of perspective relating to prog music.

For saying what I just have I will get the ire and the derision of many here but then tell someone who cares.  I know what I know and the point is not a point that I am really prepared to debate at length any longer.

I was sort of anticipating a further break down of my recent post, in response to your claims of DT's generic attitude. Any thoughts? I'm still entirely convinced that they are a progressive group, but I'm always open to new ideas.

Er... which post was that?

I had a quick look back, and did respond briefly to what I thought were the key points you had made.

As far as DT being Progressive - I've never actually questioned that.

It's the putting them on the same pedestal as Prog bands that puzzles me, when the intrinsic nature of the music is MUCH closer to heavy metal than it is to "Prog".

They were compared to Deep Purple, who, IIRC are a Prog-Related band - and I do understand the comparison, even if I do balk at it somewhat.

Compare them to Crimson, ELP, GG or Genesis, and we are definitely talking about completely different musical approaches, not to mention genres, so it's not appropriate to label DT as Prog legends.

Call them legends of Progressive Metal if you like - at least that's an appropriate genre, even if the definitions are almost in opposition to the actual music - but I think there's possibly another band who are, y'know, more legendary...?

...about the DT kiddie thing... if the cap fits, wear it, if not, then there's no problem Big smile

Ah, I've been under the misconception that you didn't find them progressive. Perhaps I can now begin to understand better the nature of your argument.

But wasn't the approach the same in pushing forward what rock (or metal) could be? The results may have sounded very different, but that has always been the case for Prog.

I suppose my previous post dealt a little more with how you could treat them as a generic heavy metal band, when their harmonic and rhythmic choices were so much more sophisticated than what had come before, and their textures and colours were certainly more diverse. How do you explain the idea that they are both generic and progressive?

Juan, MY dressed kitty was the first to be seen around here, at least a couple of years ago. Then I changed it, took some breaks from the site, and brought it back only recently. Actually, the thing I like most about that picture is the combination of the kitty's expression and the menacing tone of the caption.

Yes Raff, that kitty surely will make me stay up all night... in fact, the pictures is cool as well, but I have brief tolerance over cats... it's an already made policy of mine... I love dogs, so I have to support them when cats start taking over... so... you understand me right...??

Octavarium sums up their situation pretty well.

It contains one of the great prog epics of all time, the title trac, but it also contains ABSOLUTE RUBBISH like Tear Down These Walls and I Walk Beside you. They are doomed to polarise forever.

its been said before many times, but they need a quality control assistant. someone who keeps their album length around 50 or so minutes and makes you wanting more. then releasing an album every 2 years would be absolutely fine
