Well, what exactly do you see in his music, Alex? I will admit that I've really liked what I've heard from Mirror Man though.

Let's just say that Trout Mask Replica is one of THOSE albums to me. If I had to form what I believed to be the top 10 most important albums of all time in music (let alone prog, much like the PA Top 100), that album would be there. The abstract, genius poetry combined with the genius of the record never fails to move me in every composition every time I hear that album. Totally changed my perspective on music. I could only imagine how groundbreaking it sounded in 1969. I would rather hear that album over any Genesis, Yes, ELP, or nearly every band's seminal album any day. Everything comes together in such an amazing fashion that manages to really make a great impression. I didn't always feel that strongly about this album though. I've always liked it, but it definitely grew on me.

Oh, well I guess I can understand why one would feel that way about TMR. I will admit that it certainly is unique and innovative the way it combines Blues and Avant-jazz, but it's not my thing.

It's almost impossible to describe what I see in an album like that. It's like asking "what type of music do you play?"
I always despise that question.

Understandable. It definitely isn't for everyone. It takes a twisted soul to appreciate a fellow twisted soul's work, I suppose.

Oh, my bad then. I suppose if you were to go into the Army, you'd have to train physically to prepare yourself for boot camp. And if you can handle that and drill sargents yelling in your face, then basic wouldn't be a problem I think. Although I'd personally never go into the armed forces unless I was drafted.

I don't own any Beefheart albums, but I have heard significant portions of TMR and others, and I have to strongly disagree with you here. Schoenberg, Berg, Webern, Ives, Varese, Stockhausen, John Cage, Ornette Coleman, Coltrane, Albert Ayler, Eric Dolphy, Cecil Taylor, Sun Ra, Archie Shepp, Anthony Braxton, Peter Brotzmann, Evan Parker, and AMM all made their major statements before 1969, and all of them are more avant-garde and I think more important than Beefheart. I'm not trying to say he wasn't creative, because that's obviously not true and I can't name an album before 1969 that sounds exactly like TMR, but the problem is that almost everybody who has written a review for TMR here is almost completely ignorant of avant-garde music and so thinks "cacophony" is unprecedented, with some going so far as to say that Beefheart was just trying to make it unlistenable. When, in fact, Beefheart's psycho blues rock is a natural extension of Ornette's psycho blues jazz (and Free Jazz was recorded in 1963).

I don't think I've ever considered joining the army, but I have talked to a recruiter who trapped me before lunch period was over. It was funny though because he asked me if I was taking any prescriptions, and at the time I had been trying different ones for my migraines. I couldn't remember them all so I said "I dunno", the only one I could remember was amitriptyline.

Here joining the military is not a bad career choice because the chance of being deployed anywhere seriously dangerous is low, unless you are in the special forces. The pay is good, and the chances to get advanced in trades other similar careers are pretty decent too.
