I was very impressed by the vocals, and the heaviness is more in the vein of classic heavy rock than prog-metal (not that I have anything against PM per se). There is some noteworthy Hammond organ work on Passaggi, and on the whole the album made me want to listen to it again - something that doesn't happen very often with the stuff I get to reviewWink.

I generally never ask, but this song is so haunting that i must know.  Raff, Andrea, or Luca....what is the inspiration or the theme that conjures such a vocal?   What is he singing about?

Oh, that song is very beautiful indeedHeart - I remember when I first heard it, at the age of 11, and I loved it right from the start. Anyway, it is about a man living 750,000 years ago who falls in love with a woman, but dares not approach her, because she would only see a 'mindless ape' in him, and run away. Anyway, on the Arlequins website all the lyrics to Darwin! are translated into English, though the translation is not the best you can wish for:

I knew it had to be a love song....I'm curious...when you say you heard it at 11, was it on the radio?   Was Italian radio playing RPI in the early 70s?  Was it just the largest bands or were they playing second tier prog bands too?    I can't imagine....Semiramis on the radio?Big smile

Or were you buying Banco albums at that age?

Great. Then the Google Translator actually wasn't far off.

And yes...a stunning song.

I heard it on the national radio (RAI), as I heard PFM, Le Orme, New Trolls and many others. The radio in the Seventies was quite different from what is now. As regards second-tier bands, I am quite sure they played them, since I seem to have some vague memories of lesser-known names. It was a long time ago, however, and my memory hasn't retained everything that went on at the time.

4 stars I've really fallen for this album. The keyboardist is clearly a virtuoso and plays pretty much all piano throughout, although he does play some string-synths on a couple of tracks and some el-piano as well. It's kind of weird but i really feel proud when i listen to this album.Maybe because this is a great example of the music i love,i don't know? La Corte Di Hon opens with a perfect example of how good this piano player is.We get a full sound a minute in when drums arrive.Vocals follow.Piano, drums and vocals lead the way until some wonderful guitar melodies arrive 2 1/2 minutes in.Nice. Canto is my favourite song on here.I love the sound of the piano, cymbals and guitar to open. They create a nice soundscape but we don't really get a melody until after a minute.Vocals 1 1/2 minutes in.This sounds so amazing! The piano and drum melody with vocals over top is heavenly. We get some rare el-piano to follow. Some nice guitar 4 minutes in. Aristea is led by drums, piano and guitar once again.String-synths come in before the vocals arrive 2 minutes in.When the vocals come in the sound changes. It's not as good but we do get some tasteful guitar3 1/2 minutes in along with some good bass.Drums, piano and bass to end it. Ljalja is my second favourite track on here.It opens with more wonderful piano as bass and drums help out.Guitar after a minute as bass throbs.I love the sound of the guitar. The vocals 2 minutes in are fantastic!String-synths follow. The pace picks up after 4 minutes with guitar, bass and drums. It calms back down 5 minutes in with those great vocals again. Ritorno opens with piano followed by a vocal section before piano returns.Vocals come back with harmonies.Guitar 3 1/2 minutes in and later at 5 minutes when it is even better. It picks up the pace before 6 minutes with piano and drums leading the way.El-piano makes an appearance 6 1/2 minutes in before the piano comes back to end it. A must have for fans of Italian music.Beautiful music.

During the 1970s the radio was very different in the UK as well. I got into Prog mainly thanks to legendary DJ Alan Freeman's Saturday afternoon show. I was saving this little bit of trivia for my future Sabbath reviews, but here seems like a good place to say this. Alan Freeman's nickname was ''Fluff'' and the tune of the same name on Sabbath Bloody Sabbath was dedicated to Freeman. You all probably know that already, just thought I'd mention it. Of course we also had the great John Peel, and the UK charts were pretty much dominated by the Prog heavyweights in any case. Changed days.

As far as RPI is concerned, thanks to 'Fluff'' Freeman I was introduced to PFM and bought The World Became The World and Photos Of Ghosts when they were released in the early '70s here in the UK. What I didn't know then was that PFM was just the tip of a very large iceberg... thank goodness for PA! Anyway, The World Became The World has always been a favourite of mine 'cos I've known it so long. Of course I can enjoy the best of both worlds now with the Italian and English versions Tongue

Raffa, Luca, Andrea....anyone with a little time and Italian ability.....I'm trying to get some English bio info on this artist, it's quite scarce.  This nice long Bio linked on his myspace is in Italian.  I certainly won't ask for a translation of this beast.  But if anyone has time to take a quick look and give me some main "bullet points" it would be very helpful in my attempts to write something.  If so, PM them to me.  http://www.myspace.com/panserimario

Grazie!Big smile

Jim, I've looked at the bio on MySpace, but I have to tell you that there is very little actual biographical information there - it's more a tribute to the artist himself (who died in 1995, as his Italianprog entry states). If you want, I can write a bio and add him myself, though I don't think I will be able to do so before Thursday. Otherwise, you can wait until either Luca or Andrea visit this thread, and see if they are willing to help.

In Ogni Luogo
Finisterre Rock Progressivo Italiano

Review by WOJTEKK

5 stars A long time ago, a phone called in the evening. A man from a very lovable, but expensive shop informed me that an album I’ve order had already came and asked if I were still interested (it was “Mexico” by Ergo Sum). But I had no intension to buy only one album. So I’ve decided to choose one live album by Hawking and “In Ogni Luogo” by Finisterre. It was the first time I’ve ever heard about that band.

A few days later an album came, I listened to it and said to myself - “nice”. Such an Italian Porcupine Tree. I don’t know who should be more angry with me for this statement. Firstly I perceived it as enjoyable and nothing more. Why after more listening something in my brain have unlocked? I don’t want to say that the others are not able to unravel with their limited minds the whole artistry of this music and only mine did it. No. I am not an obsessed fan of some subordinate band. Still I am some sort of a big boy (unfortunately lately I am growing widthwise) and I won’t be tricked by some trifle, or won’t admire any damn nonentity. That’s why have I become such a big advocate of “In Ogni Luogo”? I don’t know. Maybe it’s just my peculiar penchant, or genic configuration.

It’s my favorite prog-rock album of last ten years. One of my favorite album of 90’s – first pentad. After “Amused to Death” by Waters, “American Ceasar” by Iggy Pop, “Grace” by Jeff Buckley, “Stille” by Lacrimosa. “Up the Downstair” by Porcupine Tree and the debut album by Rage Against The Machine. Like I mention, this album began my acquaintanceship with the work of this worthy Italian band. But when I heard other albums, the earlier one’s – “Finisterre”, “In Limine” and recently issued “La Meccanica Naturale” I felt a bit disappointed. The band did their tribute to traditional progressive music – Italian tradition of PFM, Le Orme, Banco, but in more modern version. Mainly, because King Crimson from “Lizard” to “Red” also. “In Ogni Luogo” is the first and by far the last album, which can be fully perceived as progressive. The band have tried to do a diverse music. Not by mistake is it dedicated to Jeff Buckley. And thanksgiving to Radiohead, or Smashing Pumpkins are not coincidental also. It’s hard to unequivocally define what’s on this album. There isn’t much typical progressive rock playing. And you can’t say – here it’s progressive, here it’s not. Everything is permeating and mixing. It’s very close to jazz on “In Ogni Lougo” and “Continuità dilaraneltempo” – mainly because of the stylish, sensual singing of Francesca Lago. And only she sings on this album. And on “Snaporaz” we can hear some dialogues, from Fellini’s “8 ½” I guess… So many voices. The rest are instrumental works. Very diverse works, musically rich – frequent and beautiful violins, sometimes like VDGG, sometimes like King Crimson, sometimes like a music from a smoky jazz club at 3 A.M., when the band plays more for themselves, than for the public. It sounds like a musical patchwork sewed with many different pieces. But it fits to each other and makes the whole thing coherent. Maybe because most of the songs are connected? Like a fifty-minute single.

Warm, dappled patchwork, with which you can bundle up yourself by putting your headphones on and effectively drag away from reality. Truism. But in fact it’s one of those few albums that are worth of such words. And it really doesn’t matter that “Le città indicibili” begins exactly like “Stairway to Heaven” by Led Zeppelin.

One advise – it’s best listened as a whole.
