Gonna get a lotta hate mail fot this but then I never needed to be popular. To me the worst prog bands are those who's vocalists need to sound like Satan's ugly Teddy Bear and who think that a lead instrument is a percussive instrument. So, to me, the worst prog bands are those of the Xtreme / Tech metal ilk. Hate em all.

I'm gonna get a lot of hate mail from this but then I never needed to be popular. To me the worst prog bands are bands who's vocalists feel the need to sound like Satan's ugly Teddy Bear and whos lead instumentalists think that their lead instruments are in fact percussive instruments. So - to me the worst prog bands are the entire collection of Xtreme/Tech Metal bands.

I've actually began to appreciate and enjoy growls and more groove based guitar with less melody (in bands like Meshuggah) but I can see where you're coming from, around 6 months ago I would've said the same thing.

Hi Prgkidjoel - I've tried more than a few times to see whether or not I can get to enjoy it but to no avail. I can't find melody there. Can get close - eg Motorhead but when I go beyond that my brain siezes. Tried Opeth, Mastodon, and others but with no luck, every now and again I go back and spin an xtreme album but 10 mins in I can't go on with it.

for me a good prog band have to be original, becouse beauty of prog is that it's something new. Also if some band makes music inspired my a couple of bands, that can be original. But when some band takes the inspiration from only one band before them that one is the worst. Why would i listen to one more Porcupine Tree if i already have one, even if the tunes are powerful and melodic. ..

when it comes to taste, i myself don't like MC5 and Captain Beefheart.

Well, I've heard both albums (reviewed the first, and will have to review the second soon), and - while I wouldn't say they rocked my world - I wouldn't say they're so utterly awful either. Just rather uninteresting (which, in many ways, can be worse).

Ehh, I like them.  Nothing grounbreaking, but I like them.  They wouldn't be proggy, though, I agree on that.

On topic, I've never been able to understand the massive appreciation Dream Theater receives, but I do like Portnoy's drumming.

Have you tried Damnation by Opeth; diferent then Ghost Reveries.

Does anyone remember a band called Angel, I'd have to put them on this list.

Valravennz, to correct the aphorism; the way it appears on DGM is this:

Music is the cup which holds the wine of silence.
Sound is that cup, but empty.
Noise is that cup, but broken.

I do, however, feel moral obligation to warn everyone to stay away from Simon Railton. I can't imagine anyone who might like his ehm...prog music.

You're allowed to approach it only once, to check the samples in disbelief. You need a dose of  Valium.

/thread.

Hear, hearClap! I have to say that, in spite of some of the stinkers I have had to listen to for reviewing purposes in the past few months, nothing plumbed the same depths reached by said musician.

I'm listening to Zenith by this Railton dude and yeah, this is bad... but I've listened to worse stuff =/

"Hate them all"? HATE? Really? Can't you just say "I don't like any of them?"

Oh I guess it fits your old nickname...
