that I (as much I like you Scott) made it through 18 songs says something.   I can't even sit through 3 or 4 DT songs haha.  Seriously.   What makes Evergrey so special to pass the Big Icky test?  You got the first part... the vocals were miles above what DT puts out.  I can forgive less than inspiring music.. but give me a bad vocalist and you can forget about it. It's funny though, granted I only listened once through all those songs but 'angry' is not exactly what jumped to mind to describe his style.  Then again, after only one listen I'm not what to call the vocals.  It was enough I guess on the first listen to NOT be swearing and throwing dice at the speakers cursing the day someone told LaBrie he could...err.. should sing.

After the vocals...   the music.. this will be very strange coming from such a dyed in the wool ELP fan but what I found listenable to Evergrey was the absence of pretentiousness and virtuosity.  So many say that one reason it is hard for many to get into ELP is that it is much easier for people to dig someone w**king on a guitar rather than a keyboard.  Well... I guess I fall into the very small minority that loves a great guitar solo more than anything.. but part of being a great guitar player is knowing as much what NOT to play in addition to knowing every goddamn scale and technical trick in the book.   (not to mention Emerson has a sense of taste and restraint that wasn't often shown.. but was there.. hence the diversity on ELP's recordings and the lack of listners being beat over the head incessantly with technical flash.  That simply gets boring to me.  I'm simply not wowed by virtuosity. never have been.. guess I never will be.   So in short () I did find Evergrey more interesting to listen to than DT.  Was it better?  who knows.. probably not.  As I like to say...  a few?  probably fools....  thousands?  there is something there.  I might just give it a second listen later tonight.

Well, that was a better response then I was expecting.    Have fun at Old Town.  It is a shame that I have to work, but I do need to earn my keep once in a while.

 The Story of I was OK.  It didn't sound anything at all like Relayer, which is a good thing for me since I'm not that fond of the sound on that album.  I'll have to give it a few more listens to formulate a better opinion of it.

My short but sweet review of this album on progfreak.com:  This album just grabs you by the throat with the first notes of Freewill Burning and Eats You Alive until the multiply repeated chorus of Defenders of the Faith. What an awesome, awesome album. All tracks are highlights on this one.
