I share the feeling. In my part, because I just can't stand the Beatles played by someone else... (and at times I barely can stand the actual Beatles...)

Imagine having to endure sweetened renditions of already sweetened music... Dead

Maybe it is because at work they have that movie on a tv all the time and I'm sick of the music, and the few scenes I have managed to see don't make too interested...

The Hurt Locker--Despite their insistence that it's an independent movie, there were several deep caves to typical Hollywood cinema, and I was disappointed that Sgt. James was not even close to being a real person with all the movie's realism, but still a fantastic movie. Watch it even though there's rock music. 9.5/10

1. It got dreadful reviews, and while I don't like everything the critics like (people complain that they don't do enough justice to comedies and their hearts are too hard for the average American, and while the former is true, I would say they are not nearly bitter enough for the latter), I have very rarely liked a movie they thought was mediocre or worse.
 
2. I don't do "feel good" movies. 3. Just the trailer (which I hadn't seen when I merely expressed apathy) made me want to commit acts of violence upon everybody who was involved with this movie, except I'm willing to spare Paul and Ringo. "THEY LIVED WITHOUT RULES. THEY LOVED WITHOUT FEAR. BUT AS THE WORLD CHANGED. SO DID THEY." ARE YOU SERIOUS YOU PRICKS? Do they think I'm stupid enough to buy this crap? And then they have the audacity to call it original and groundbreaking! Movie of the year before there's even a f**king release date!
 
4. Even without the trailer, I'm not watching a god damn Beatles romantic musical what the f**k is wrong with us that this movie was produced I mean seriously if John were still alive he would have told them to go to hell with their saccharine bullsh*t and make a movie about death and the whole soundtrack would be Revolution #9 and I would rather watch that than a cliche ass love story do you hear me Paul I just want to fill the world with silly love songs was a f**king terrible song. I don't even listen to the Beatles and I'm offended and embarassed.

Damn you just had to ask now I'm all upset over nothing if you had let me be in my apathy I never would have comprehended what a truly reprehensible movie it is.

not a movie but I've been watching the old Rockford Files, even better than I remember

oh plus; I scored a copy of the 1st season Johnny Quest show, anyone recall this unusually good cartoon series, Saturday mornings in the late 60s/70s ?

I just finished watching Synecdoche, New York.  I don't know how I feel, it was simultaneously funny, sad, confusing and just about everything else at once.  I know for sure one thing, I really enjoyed it.  Everyone played their parts well.  The movie didn't seem to make very much sense at points, but I feel like that will come with repeated views and I did understand the general idea of the film.  I would definitely recommend it to people, it seems to have hit me like a ton of bricks in the chest.

If you liked Synecdoche, I highly recommend Magnolia. I would describe at similar in tone to the first half of Synedoche, but with a large cast, arguably better writing,  while simultaneously being less heavy handed but sometimes much much more. For example, the depth of Tom Cruise's character is more subtle than a lot of Synecdoche, while there are atrocious pop music sequences that are even worse than the priest's speech at the funeral in the fake rain. But as with all elements of Synedoche, what he was saying may have been a parody of the narcissistic artist, and it may not have even "really" happened, so I don't know, but I don't have a great deal of faith in Kaufman after Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. The ending is a total cop out, even though PTA said in an interview he had planned it from the beginning of writing the script, but if you could accept the brittle madness of the second half of Synecdoche, it won't be a problem.
 
Just out of curiousity, did you know what synecdoche meant before you watched the movie?

Best adventure series ever (not that I've seen many). I'd show that to my kids, instead of the digital crap most of the cartoons channels are doing today.

Pretty huge rating coming from you. But I also can't think of anything better this year, Oscar-wise. There's just the finale, especially the final walk scene, back on duty, with metal as heroic background music, and Sgt. James walking with the same stance, that ruined the rest.

As for realism, it seems veterans thought it's way off.

Lives of Others--Netflix thought I was going to love this movie, but I couldn't really connect with it. I didn't understand why such an avenging angel would switch sides after 20 years. And it wasn't just the tragic life of the people he was monitoring, the scene with the boy in the elevator was before he really knew what was going on. And I would think all that audio would be recorded.
 
I would say that it's the German, but I almost stopped noticing it halfway through. I don't know what it was. I just couldn't empathize, even though it's frighteningly easy to imagine myself in his place. And the ending was hammy. But it was still good.

By realism I meant that nobody defies the laws of physics, it's just that the choices some of the characters make seem implausible. I agree that the ending was overdone, but it wasn't so bad. The sniper scene was when it began to get ridiculous.

What's so great about the Hurt Locker? The characters are incredibly bland, the plot is a mess and the cinematography is so uninspired it makes you cringe.

I'm sure it'll grab some Oscars though.

I am not a film buff, and I'm not bothered by that. Maybe one day I won't want to kill myself while watching Eraserhead and I will see the truth of the Hurt Locker as insipid populism, but until then I'll enjoy it as a great movie with only minor caves to Hollywood conventions.

yesterday I went to see Alicie in Wonderland in 3d... the movie is very good and of course it has that creepy edge that Burton place everywhere, and of course a great perfomance of Johnny Deep but as long as the improves in special effects raises, some depth is lost in the process. All this kind of movies do not move me in a emotional way but it really entertain me with the flashy effects...
 
7/10 I think it's fair...
Change the program inside... Stay in silence is a crime.

Haven't seen Hurt Locker yet but, you know, Henry there hasn't been a classic Oscar worthy film since the year our avatars battled it out and there was a fairly long drought before that.  As James Cameron collects trophy after trophy for Pocahontas 2 starring the Blue Man Group I think I'll go back and have a No Country, There Will Be Blood marathon.

I saw Black Hawk Down, like, 5 years ago, but as far as I can remember, no. Hurt Locker isn't really an action movie.
 
And you're right, 2007 was an unusally good year for new movies. I do have hopes for A Serious Man, but it probably won't be as good as No Country or Fargo.
 
MST3K: Horrors of Spider Island: Fantastic, even if a lot of the jokes come from the absurdity of the movie itself
 
MST3K: Tormented: Not so good, the guys' tendency to not talk for quite a bit of the movie doesn't work when the movie is just plain boring. This is also a problem with some of the Riff Trax I've seen on Youtube: when it's a popular movie, it's not laughably bad so a lot of it really drags. Although they did an excellent job puncturing Boromir's death in LOTR. I haven't watched those movies in forever, and now I'm not sure I'm willing to sit through all that bloody sword fighting.
