Two is the ideal number. Plus, all that taskbar stuff at the bottom...I like to hide it, makes the desktop look cleaner IMO.

You haven't seen my mom's desktop.
The taskbar is pretty much a dock, which is convenient. I could probably get rid of the Thunderbird icon, but I use Word, Windows Explorer, and Winamp almost daily.

I use Winamp, the last.fm agent, mIRC and Firefox every day, along with random other programs. Starting them up via the quicklaunch is the same when taskbar's hidden, it just stays out of the way when you're not using it.
