Your First Concert

The first concert that I attended was Pink Floyd in Ahoy (Rotterdam, NL) on Feb. 19, 1977.

My first non prog concert would probably have been a jazz festival at Piedmont Park in Atlanta.  Not sure who was playing.  I am fairly sure that was after the Kansas concert.

Marillion In Brussels 1987!



That would be 13€. Prices sure went up since then!

First concert ever : Motown Revue (mid 60s) Steel Pier, Atlantic City
First rock concert : Steppenwolf (1969) South Mountain Arena,  West Orange, New Jersey
First Prog concert: Yes (opening act (1971) - Mountain, Humble Pie) Gaelic Park, Bronx, NY

First concert in 1983 by some band doing rock rock/pop/reggae covers. A kind of band that would play on a hotel terrace.

First author rock concert was Boa, (new wave with arty and proggy attitude) in late 80's.

First prog concert: Leb i Sol, in 1994. It remains the best concert I ever attended up to this day.

Countless classical concerts/recitals/events (not enough, though, since I nonchalantly skipped twice as many, and still do...). In contrast, only a handful of jazz concerts and, rarest of all, rock (regardless of flavour) ones.

Earliest recital I can remember was when I was 5 years old. Local pianists' couple playing works for two pianos, at the Music School. I wasn't into playing music yet. Their son would later become my piano class colleague (and, slightly, rival). Full attendance, so I sat on the stairs, with the couple's boy besides me (how did he not get a seat??). I fell asleep halfway through.

There must have been other occasions prior to that, given that I was taken to theater, festivals and such since I was 3, but I'll stick to the earliest thing I remember for sure. Bizzarely, I can't pinpoint the first time I went to hear the Philarmonic Orchestra (or even close to that). Of course I started going regularly since entering the Music School, when they didn't have their own building and were playing in our concert hall, but there's nothing notable about that, plus I went both casually and not so willingly, plus I don't remember anything in particular.

First concert I saw in a different town was probably in Cluj-Napoca, mid-April 2004. Local Phily, but with invited guests (Russian conductor, Ukrainean? violinist, don't remember their names). Bartok's Violin Concerto was played, then Dvorak's Night. Both astoundingly. In this case, I don't think there were too many previous occasions, because when I travelled, it was either vacation and I had no interest in music, or I was competing and there was little time to treat myself with spectacles. Surprisingly, I became acquainted with Bucharest's musical scene much later.

Never went to opera in my entire life.

Leaving classical aside, first (but late, I was already 15 years old) came jazz (late september 2006). Al di Meola with Gumbi Ortiz, in my hometown. Also the first music festival of another kind. And also the first video bootleg I made (even if for myself). No stairs to sit on this time. Wild night.

First concert elsewhere in my country (Sibiu/Hermannstadt) was Jethro Tull, august 2007. Of course, it was both the first rock and prog rock concert (which I find it awesome); rather the only one [prog] until now, unless I start thinking of jazz/jazz-rock artists that could be considered prog, something that isn't quite the same thing.

I've just been to my first club concert two weeks ago (Urma). I can easily live without the club atmosphere and the two hours of music mix as "prelude", otherwise the concert wasn't bad at all. I do remember an open-air bar concert, years ago, although it was more of a "let's go out tonight and hear our friends play jazz in the town square" family thing.

First and only concert in a different country was classical. Arcadi Volodos, in Graz (Austria), March 2009. One of the most memorable ever.
