Now What Are You Listening To? Febus Mark III

 

1970 to 1975 (all Gillian albums from 1970 to 1973, and all Coverdale albums from 1974 and 1975 maybe with the exception of stormbringer), then perfect strangers in 1984 and the welcome return to form with the excellent Purpendicular in 1996. The Rod Evans-era with Shades of Deep Purple is not bad either.

I believe the post-purpendicular are good as well, but I am not very aware of them.

 

So, to sum up, almost the whole discography is worth checking out with the exception of the three albums released between 1987 and 1993

 

 

I was going to recommend you some of his solo stuff, but then I remembered that you didn't like Wakeman's Journey.

 

However, if you liked what you heard from Sarabande, then I would say give it a try. It's a great album, but wouldn't consider it his best work.

 

If you're interested in classical meets rock, the Concerto for Group and Orchestra might interest you:

 

But then again, you haven't liked the videos I showed you, then I might not be the most appropiate to recommend you.  

 

Seems a good idea for me. If that's the case, I'll just give you some info from their classics so as you know a rough idea from them:

 

Book of Taliesyn: mix 60's psych with rock and blues plus some experimentation that edges prog. The musicianship is pretty impressive for the 60's standards.

In Rock: very heavy with raw production. Has some very fine tunes, but if you don't really dig 70's heavy rock(not saying you don't) this is not a good place to start.

Fireball: more diverse sounding, some heavy stuff, some groovy and some "experimental". Gives a good idea of what the band is capable of doing.

Machine Head: Solid production with the band knowing exactly what to play. Lots of classic tunes without any of them being too heavy. The musicianship is top-notch like in Fireball.

Made in Japan: If I remember well you're not a big fan of live albums, but if you want a great compilation of Deep Purple's classics but improved with a lot of power plus some great jamming, this is it.

Burn: first album with Coverdale and Hughes, so expect a less heavy sound replaced with some funk and soul influences, but not so prominent. The musicianship is still top-notch.

Purpendicular: modern heavy rock with Steve Morse on board. Deep Purple's finest album since their 70's classic.
