There is something funny about snowstorms passing us Michiganders to the South. The storm last week completely missed us. Today's snowstorm is predicting either 6 to 10 inches or 4 to 6 inches depending on where you are in the state, with more snow the further south that you go.

Lucky ? - Nah, I hate snow - cold nasty, wet stuff. I am planning to retire to a villa on a greek island where I can chill out to the Flokis whilst sipping an ice-cold mythos...
Oh and they have SIX channels of football (Soccer) on in Greece - so I can watch MUFC week in week out - and that's a BIG BONUS...........

Lucky for me, I quite like the snow. My walk to work today was a bit exhausting because of it though, but what the heck, I can certainly use the exercise. Still, Greece does sounds quite nice.
Hey, don't know if I mentioned before, but you guys that like Heavy prog / prog metal (thought they are listed under Electic prog here at the archives for some strange reason) may want to check out Nemo. You'll need to be able to tolerate vocals in French, but their music is pretty darn good to my ears, with a rather heavy leaning. I'd recommend Prélude à la Ruine, as that is their most prog metalish album. But most of the are quite good. The most recent two have not done as much for me, though the most recent, Barbares, is pretty good. Their other top albums would be Présages and Si Partie I, in my opinion. The vocalist is actually pretty decent. Though not the best feature of the band, he isn't bad at all, as long as lyrics all in French don't bother you. He's also the guitarist, and extremely good at that. The keyboardist is also very good, close to a Jordan Rudess in style, but less flashy most of the time (though it's obvious he can play leads on par with Rudess). The rhythm section is excellent as well. All in all, a very good band, worth checking out. But much more towards the prog metal spectrum than TFK, though I wouldn't say they are a full fledged prog metal band. |

I've only heard Barbares from Nemo and I think that it is quite good. There is a good chance that it might make my top 5 for 2009 albums. And I generally don't really like lyrics that aren't in English, so that is saying something as to how much that I like the music.

well, then you'll REALLY like their earlier albums, as I think they are much better (though I do like Barbares, only the previous album ranks below it for me). Si Partie I is probably the best place to go next (Si Partie II is decent, but it's too much like the second disc of a double album.......which is really what it is..........just seems kind of weak compared to the previous one). But really, all their albums are very good.

No, the snow has stopped.............for now. Though there is none in the forecast for the next several days, so we may be okay for now. It has actually been much worse father south, which is kind of strange.

Back safely all, I'll catch up over the next few days. Crazy trip but everyone is back home, safe and incredibly happy to be home.

Oh man, we got killed here in Maryland.
![]() Not trying to be a jerk and re-rail the thread or anything ( ![]() Meanwhile, certain 'untouchable' modern prog bands that generally disdain being lumped in with the genre are highly praised while they lift progressions and melodies wholesale and bury them under a pile of gimmicky effects. What a world.

However there could be several interpretations of the adjective - Derivative - the Flokis drift in and out of 70's style prog throughtout their entire output - they also prefer longer tracks - the epic and tracks with concepts - all these could be classed as "Derivative" of 70's prog. ANYWAY - Isn't it about time that the flokis or some similar band - put out an extended and better recorded version of "The Lamb......" ID BUY IT !!!!

I agree. Whilst TFK were undoubtedly influenced by the 70s giants I have to say I don't find them similar at all. Yes, you get the odd bit that has an echo of Yes, KC or even Floyd, but their sound is totally different. Their structure is very different and their material is incredibly diverse when compared to the 70s bands.
As someone who has loved those self same 70s bands for 30 years now the biggest compliment that I can give is that prefer TFK to any of 'em.

Damn, this is one long thread
![]() Been a fan for almost 10 years now (got into them shortly after the first Transatlantic CD came out), and I still enjoy most of their music as much now as I did years ago. For the record, I come from a mostly classic rock and classic prog rock background (I don't like that many newer bands that are frequently labeled prog that much; I am much more into the classic prog of the 70s). It is pretty staggering how prolific a writer Roine Stolt has been, and the consistent greatness in his writing is pretty amazing. Even TFK's least best CDs like The Sum of No Evil and The Rainmaker are solid 3-star efforts. And their best CDs like Paradox Hotel, Flower Power and Stardust We Are are all 5-star masterworks. When it comes to doing symphonic prog, IMO, no one has ever done it better than The Flower Kings. Not even Yes, a top 10 band for me. On my list of all-time favorite bands, regardless of genre, they are somewhere in the 3-5 mix. Rush and Porcupine Tree are locked in at 1-2, and then Pink Floyd, Radiohead and The Flower Kings bounce around the 3-5 spots depending on my mood. Anyway, I am gonna have to go back and skim through more of this thread. Might take a while, though... ![]() Edited by Biff Tannen - February 15 2010 at 10:30 |

I just read an interview with Roine Stolt that might be of interest to all of you fellow Flower Kings fans:
http://www.dprp.net/specials/2010_stolt/ Mostly it talks about Transatlantic, but there is a little bit in there about the Flower Kings and a possible new album by Autumn of this year. |

Well, it would be nice, but according to Roine (over on the Flower Kings Yahoo group) he hasn't written anything specifically for TFK yet and they have not started an album yet. Last mention he made on the list was that there was nothing planned for TFK this year
![]() But, of course, things can change and I'd love to be wrong ![]() He is, however, in the midst of putting together and recording the next Agents of Mercy album. I'm still not crazy about the first one (though loved the live show and the album is still good, just not great), but I believe Nad is co-writing on this one which will hopefully make things a bit more interesting. Agree with just about everything you said but this... I consider Rainmaker one of their top-tier records, its journey into bizarre counterpoint and harmony is unmatched in the discography, despite being able to stay very accessible. Edited by Man Overboard - February 15 2010 at 13:29 |
