So the Olympics begun... in the worst possible way. And one wonders why there isn't a thread on this already... well, there is now.

On the other hand we've got the first medal for Poland! Adam Małysz won silver in ski jumping (second only to Simon Ammann from Switzerland)!

Bartek, perhaps you should change the date in the thread titleWink...

Anyway, congrats to PolandClap! We watched part of the opening ceremony yesterday evening - up to Italy's entry - then went to bed. Seeing the Georgian delegation made me immensely sad, and even sadder to learn that now the investigators are trying to lay the blame on that poor guy - especially now that he can't defend himself.

Winter games are always awesome, not really popular in my country (we only have one competitor in the olympics) but really entertaining, I like watching them and follow some great atlhetes.

It is always sad when an athlete trying to do his/her best, suffers any kind of accident, what happended to the Georgian competitor is really a pity and as Tuzvihar said, the worst way of beginning the Olympics, hope not to see these kind of things anymore in the games.

Congrats to Ammann, well-deserved win. Malysz capped an in-form return with a great jump and a rewarding medal. I didn't feel the jumps were amazing at all, until the wind intensified halfway through the second round. Schlierenzauer blew the first round jump, but without such errors he's gold contender for the second individual probe.

Going to watch Biathlon now. Hey, Tuz, maybe Justyna Kowalczyk will win Poland's first gold, she's the favourite. Big smile

Truly sad way to start the games, I'm sure no person wants to see that happen to anyone.

NZ has a decent sized team this games, I'm not sure of the medal contenders, but it will be good to watch anyway.

What a wonderful opening ceremony and show, I loved the whales!  I always get a little lump in my throat when the Americans and Canadians enter....the same lump I'm sure everyone gets the world over when their team enters.Smile

Sorry, I said Biathlon, wrong sport. (cross country, of course) Embarrassed

Well, Tofalvi just finished, I think, in the first 15, which is good stuff. We'll see how the Pursuit goes.

The opening ceremonies supposedly broke Canadian television records, but I'm embarrased to say that I didn't watch them. Embarrassed

Canada is already failing pretty hard. One of the worst opening ceremonies of all time, killed a Georgian, had to truck in snow from the U.S. because they didn't have any, ( Texas and Alabama have had more snowfall in the past week then Canada ) then they have technical difficulties AND THEN they have more then 200 rioters in Vancouver who marauded around for a couple hours before police were able to deal with them.

Safe to say Canada has dropped to the #3 spot of "Best North American Countries" with Mexico sliding up to snatch the #2 spot.

I hope the people of Vancouver enjoy paying for these 16 days of spectacle for the next 50 years! Personally, I am opting out of the Olympics because it is the only thing I can do to deter such irresponsible behavior.

However, I did watch the We are the World video on Youtube (for Miley), and I am impressed that it is one of the worst things I've ever heard. And Brian Wilson thought it was a good idea! I know he wrote the song, but I thought the MJ insert was really tacky. He just died!

Dissapointing performance by Bjorndalen (who, after missing so many shots the first time, wasn't rarely broadcasted anymore), as well as other big names, in today's Biathlon sprint. The changed of weather made a difference in half of the race. The 10km CC in Nordic Combined offered the first fight for Gold, that was great to watch. Watching Luge now, but I can't see anyone defeating Felix Loch.

As a resident of Vancouver myself, i have to say i am adamantly against things happening here. The olympics are okay in terms of the world coming together for a sporting event, but it's still just that; a sporting event. What most people dont know is that the money that went to go to building huge venues for the olympics and hotels for the athletes was originally planned to go towards solving city issues such as poverty and homelessness... that on top of a debt that we will be paying off for decades (we still havent paid off expo 86 fully) the olympics will always ring with a sour tone with me from now on.
