Anyway, anybody heard the new effort by Big Big Train ?? whats it like compared to their first four studio CD's because I wasn't very impressed with any of those really.
Please feel free to let me know the REAL hits of 2009 - I have a lot to catch up on, but I will be gathering a CD Fund for a fresh buying spree in the late spring....

I've only heard BBT's new one, The Underfall Yard once, but it made a really good impression on me.  Track 2, Master James of St George is phenomenal.  Tracks 2,4 and the epic title track also sounded top notch on first hearing. 
 
The only other BBT I have is The Difference Machine which I really like.  However, admittedly after just one spin I get the impression the new one is much better.
 
Hits of '09?  OK. PT really excelled themselves with The Incident, the best thing they've put out for about 15 years.  You've got to check out Darwin's Radio's latest.  Imagine an amalgam of IQ, Frost and DT?  You've got it.  Phideaux's Number Seven is also close to my fave of the year too, though whether that would be fully your bag I'm not sure.  Very proggy but a bit folky.  I'm really impressed.

I know a while back the conversation was along the lines of which part of The Whirlwind is best.  At the time I wasn't really able to make a choice.  Now having heard the whole thing several times the Roj M30 conclusion is that the best part is easily A Man Can Feel.  And I mean easily, that is simply outstanding.
 
Good as The Whirlwind is overall I think I still prefer the first two albums.

^ hits of 2009?  I agree totally with two of Roj's picks.  Phideaux and Darwin's Radio are both stellar.  Amusingly enough, we (and this thread in general) played a big part in introducing one to the other.  I picked up Darwin's Radio partially on Roj's recommendation and Roj did much the same with Phideaux if I understand correctly.

Hits of 2009? One of my absolute favorites is undoubtly Still the Waters by Epignosis and The Hazards of Love by The Decemberists, though none are really TFK-oriented.
 
About best part of The Whirlwind, my favorite is Set Us Free, though wouldn't consider that the best part of the epic.

Is it Really happening - the instrumental bit is by far the best bit !!!! The track is very long but keeps your interest throughout - Perhaps not enough Stolte Guitar indulgence and it could have done with more instrumental and less banging on about some Mythical son of an imaginary sky fairy - that would have taken it into another sphere of brilliance, but you can't have it all !!!
I will buy Darwins Radio (Excellent band name) and phideaux.
Thanks for the heads-up chaps, what about Mastodon ???

I've got Crack The Skye by Mastodon from '09.  It's okay but hasn't really moved me.  Pretty heavy but not as proggy or tech-y as DT or Opeth.  At least it was only a fiver in the HMV sale.

After listening to the new BBT and Feel Euphoria, this has cemented my view that the best modern drummer by far is Nick D'Virgilio.  Yeah, I'll agree that all the drummers TFK have had are superb but NDV really stands out for me. 
 
Feel Euphoria is the first post-Neal Morse SB album I've heard.  Is it me or does NDV's drumming seem to have improved even further?  The guy is a sensational drummer, and a pretty damn good vocalist too.

^I haven't heard Feel Euphoria, but I've heard Nick in the s/t, V and The Light, and for me Zoltan Csorsz is still one of the finest drummers in modern prog world.

I'm a fan of Nick's drumming, he played with the Agents of Mercy and Karmakanic on the tour that they did last fall and he smoked.  This is in addition to the fact that they had all of three hours of rehearsal prior to their first gig.  Very cordial person as well, he was truly honored by the applause that he garnered at the show.

Unrelated to the drumming conversation, there is currently a poll looking for the best Swedish progressive band (over in the polls section).  Our muse is currently neck in neck with Opeth.  If you haven't voted yet, why not take a look and see who your favorite band is.

I saw at least Roj, Lazland and myself chime in for the Flokis, who else?

Nick D'Virgilio is my second favorite modern prog drummer after Mike Portnoy. Nick is just incredible and highly underrated. I saw Spock's Beard at 3RP '08, and he is really incredible. The drum duet between him and Jimmy Keegan was terrific especially.

About the Sweden poll, I couldn't get myself to vote for the Flokis. Pain of Salvation is possibly my favorite band, but I didn't even vote for them. Both of those bands have enough votes, but Edge of Sanity has none, so I gave them my vote. Excellent Swedish progressive death metal, headed by one of the most innovative musicians in Sweden. Thumbs Up
