Topic: Gentle Giant - Acquiring the Taste Posted: February 02 2010 at 09:26 |
Band: Gentle Giant
Album: Acquiring the Taste
Song: Edge of Twilight
A quick question that i could not find a straight answer to anywhere else. What is the first instrument at the beginning of the song (Edge of Twilight)?
Thanks alot.
P.S i hope this is the right forum for this kind of question.

Hmm. There's dozens of instruments in the first ten/fifteen seconds of that song (as you'd expect from Gentle Giant!). Could you be more specific about which sound it is you're trying to identify?

Well that is pretty hard to say. How can i describe a sound?
It starts from second one, when the vocals begin. Right from the start when he says "The Moon..." and when he says "Down" after 2 seconds it changes a bit, sounds like it goes down to a lower note.

Ok, i think i found another band with the same sound.
Art Bears, album: Hopes and Fears, the first song: On Suicide. Can not find a link though. Sounds the same to me.

It's a Hammond organ with a ton of reverb. There is also a guitar swell somewhere there.

Really? It does not sound like it. I do not even think they played hammond.
I actually thought about a Bassoon.
Another piece that sounds quite about the same: Lament by Gryphon:

In my ears it's definitely an organ in the higher register. Further on, a reed instrument and a string instrument. My guess: alto saxophone and viola. And vocals of course and tons of echo

Plus:
2 Zeppelin songs. The guitar at the start is acoustic or electric?
Thanks.

I didn't realise it was posted in Just For Fun. I thought it was a serious musical question. And a good one, too.

Tony moved it to Just for Fun for whatever reason he deemed. I'm not really sure that it belongs here either as it seems to be a serious music question.

It was a serious and good question, and it should be moved to the main Prog Music Lounge. I didn't spend five minutes in front of my hifi installation, listening over and over again to the first notes of Edge Of Twilight for fun Not that I dislike the Just For Fun section, on the contrary . But analyzing Edge Of Twilight is a serious musical business. What impression do we give our intelligent new poster if we don't take his question seriously

The first one sounds electric. Great song BTW. The second maybe semi - acoustic. But I don't know for sure. I'm not a guitar expert.

Since the thread moved to Just For Fun, why not? Good idea.
