The Fusion genre seems to be kept in high respect outside the world of prog. Several PA artists have won Grammy Awards tonight:
Béla Fleck won Best Pop Instrumental Performance and Best Contemporary World Music Album Jeff Beck won Best Rock Instrumental Performance Joe Zawinul (RIP) & The Zawinul Syndicate won Best Contemporary Jazz Album Chick Corea & John McLaughlin Five Peace Band won Best Jazz Instrumental album Also, Brendan O'Brien won Producer of the Year (Non-Classical) for his work including Mastodon's Crack The Skye David Byrne & Brian Eno were nominated for several awards (do they count?), also Steve Vai got a nomination, and so did Nick Davis & Tony Cousins for the Genesis Remasters surround production. Good year! http://www.grammy.com/nominees Edited by harmonium.ro - January 31 2010 at 19:38 |

He does a lot of varied stuff, I think that album is pop-ified World Music (but I'm not sure).

Also, Chris (Moatilliatta) would love to hear that Phoenix won Best Alternative.

Alternative? I thought Phoenix was dance-pop... I wonder if anybody actually watches all the classical and mixing awards at the end. And how does one have a rap gospel or country gospel album?

The variety of gospel types amazed me too. A lot of the categorizing they do is bullsh*t, but it all gets interesting at Jazz/Instrumental/Gospel/Classical etc. Some of that stuff sounds interesting, I'll try and find some.

toss a 10 ton boulder from gospel and you'll hit the blues, jazz, and country (real country.. not the sh*t pumped out of Nashville these days by LA transplants who couldn't hack it there and whose only talent is a pretty face, looking good in a hat and choosing good song writers )... gospel is one of the prime roots of american music. There is no progressive rock catagory despite bands like Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, etc being mainstays of mainstream radio.
Personally I am glad will Santana wiinning for his Supernatural cd, which featured a bunch of guest stars, but ignored for far better recordings he released without the superstar factor..
Likewise with John Lee Hooker and how many other who have won with recordings featuring a lot of "sizzle", when but they did not win with other recordings featuring a lot of "steak" (substance).
P.S. Jethro Tull deserved to beat Metallicala as their Crest of a Knave Recording was a lot more heavier in substance than Metallica's In Justice for All
