The ipod has hogged all the spotlight to the point of becoming a generic name for digital music players even though it is a trade name.

I'm on my third DMP, which is a Zune (80gb) and I have had no direct ipod (iPod?) experience.  My second was/is a Toshiba Gigabeat (40gb) .  My first was, definitely a "was", was a Creative Labs thingy (30gb) (the hard drive wasn't apparently wasn't ready for prime time).

I am not a Microsoft nut or anything (it's their creation/version though) but trying to take a look at these devices with an open mind, with a focus on the Zune for this thread, since it is my current main unit.

Also of interest is that they currently made available a download-adable major upgrade/update to your computer's software and the device's software that adds some new features.  I'm just trying those out but the progression of these devices, in general, is getting interesting...

No ipods either (they are just an ugly design), but have 3 creative zens in the house and they work a treat.

My 4th generation iPod is on it's last legs... the battery was on the way out when the hard drive finally failed after being persistently temperamental from day one (its been "repaired" by Apple 3 times under warranty). Being a technical person, I decided to fix rather than replace since aside from all of the apple-related quirks, I like the minimalist design. Changing the battery was relatively easy, however, rather than replace the hard drive like for like, or even slotting in a larger one, I've converted it to Compact Flash.

So now my very iffy 40G iPod is an ultra-reliable 8G... afterall, I didn't really need the entire works of Pink Floyd, Porcupine Tree, Opeth and 4000 + other tunes at my finger-tips 24/7, but I am looking at the Zune for those occasions when I do.

I've got the "Imod" (modified Ipod by Red Wine audio) with an "Iqube" amp and it works nice.

This is pretty cool.  I'm playing The Incident on my new computer (alas the old Vaio croaked) and I'm using the Zune software and if you leave your computer alone a video of sorts is being displayed.  Just a mutating still of the band with the song title and album title sort of animated.  I don't know if this is particular to Windows 7.  I'll have to experiment as I have a Windows Vista (formerly the music room computer) and a Windows XP (work) with the Zune software and my music collection installed on.

Anyone experienced this and know of any other artists that work with the Zune software this way?

I used to be of the notion that I needed oodles and oodles of gigs to hold all the music I have (80 GB iPod 5.5 with Rockbox was fast approaching capacity), but I recently tried to see how much music I could get on my new phone (w/ 16 GB SD card) and I was shocked to see how much I could "safely" ignore.  Thus if I ever get another DMP in the future perhaps I need not strive for such high capacity.

That's one of the settings of the Zune software, it works like that on Vista as well.  If it doesn't have any pics of the band, it generally pulls up a collage of random album covers in your collection.

Yeah I noticed that right off the bat, but it wasn't until I saw the Porcupine Tree thing that I realized it did that for some artists.  I have to say I'm still pleased with the Zune, have no experience with i Pods, and can't say any thing nice about the now defunct Toshiba Gigabeat I used to have or the Creative Labs Zen, both which gave up their ghosts a bit too soon.

They've just put out a new update.  Added Autoplaylist with which you can set some filters and the list will automatically update as you add albums, songs, etc. that meet the criteria.  Sweet. Big smile

Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

Ok.  I have some questions as I'm considering upgrading my mp3 player or getting an ipod.  My current mp3 player is a cheap piece of .... It has an astounding 2 GB of memory, and the battery has never worked properly.  But, if you turn up the volume on it all the way, it sounds just like the band is playing live.  In the next town.  Unhappy

I was thinking of going all out and getting an ipod, but was confused by something.  Why are the 160 GB models around 220 Euros, and the 8 GB models are around 180 Euros?  Does the 8 gig model also open your garage door, brew your coffee and vacuum your apartment for you?  Confused  Or is the 160 gig model a piece of .... also?  On the face of it, it seems like a huge discrepancy between the two in price/benefit ratio.

Are there other good brands, and if I want to later buy a docking station will I be able to get an adaptor or something to hook an mp3 up to the docking station?   Also, are there any that accept FLAC files?  And are the large capacity ones (considering Dean's post above) inherently temperamental?  Thanks for any help.
I can understand your anger at me, but what did the horse I rode in on ever do to you?

The price jump is the same with Zunes, it goes from the smaller (8 or 16gb) up to the 120gb with a similar small price jump as the iPods.  From what I've heard, the larger ones work fine, and my 80gb Zune works fine.
I was going to suggest looking into Zunes until I saw you wanted one which could be hooked up to a docking station, but unfortunately no one but Zune makes a dock for Zunes.  It's annoying, since there are Bose docks and other very nice ones for iPods.
Anyways, to answer your question about the docks, the ones for iPods are usually made to work with any iPod model.
I'm not sure if any mp3 player works with FLAC files.

Yeah a Bose dock would be what I would want probably.

Then (as of right now) your best bet is an iPod.

I was considering starting a thread on mp3-player advice but I could probably just hi-jack this one, if that's okay...

My ancient iRiver is finally giving up the ghost (battery issues and more besides) and it seems as though I've missed out on about 15 generations of player since. I need something relatively inexpensive (under £100 would be nice), last.fm compatible, and with a decent amount of storage (32gb or thereabouts).

But most importantly I want something which won't require additional software. The beauty of my iRiver (apart from having an excellent recording function, which was the primary reason I opted for it at the time) was that it worked just like a flash drive. I could plug it in and drag and drop files/folders as I pleased. No software, no fuss. Any suggestions?

On the last part, I'm not sure.  The players I'm most familiar with (iPod, Zune) both require the use of a specific media player to sync tracks and such.  As far as working with last.fm compatible, I believe iPods are and I know Zunes aren't, because Microsoft wants to keep Zune users interested in the Zune Social.

I have been a Zune user, Zune Pass subscriber since day 1...Nov 2006. I can't express how pleased I have been with the whole Zune experience. It has one of the best softwares I think, as usual you will see/read about problems but iPod has their share also. I personally have had no issues. We have 3 Zunes in the family......I have not upgraded to ZuneHD yet....just waiting to see what everyone says and all the bugs worked out.
There are too many features within the software to list here. But yes my FAVORITE is the now playing screen where you get a collage of pictures of the band playing. It does not happen on all artists since this is a feed from a vendor to Microsoft. But for us prog folk, included is Yes, Genesis, PT, Pink Floyd among others. Its a cool feature.
So hit me up with any questions and I'd be glad to offer my experience.
BTW....Zune Pass is pretty cool if you are in a pinch and don't have $1000 to buy an artists collection, you can download and listen for $14.99 per month all you want. Obscure stuff is not offered but you can find a lot.

The best speaker dock on the market is the Kicker 500....awesome sound and compatible with all Zune devices except the HD models. Its a spendy dock at like US$250....but the sound is excellent.
Or buy a $5 cable and plug into your home system and listen that way.......much better sound than any speaker dock, take full advantage of the digital music.
