I could write an entire list of Cardiacs closers (Tim Smith surely knows how to leave a listener satisified yet wanting more) but I'll limit myself to one.

Cardiacs - The Everso Closely Guarded Line
Magma - Nono
Gentle Giant - Mr Class & Quality/Three Friends
King Crimson - Starless
Robert Wyatt -  Little Red Robin Hood Hit The Road

Nice addition of Nono there, I thought I'd be the only one to choose it.

I hadn't noticed you'd chosen it as well! It's bloody brilliant, isn't it? One of Magma's most underrated songs, IMO.

Indeed, it is a brilliant song.

Genesis- "Supper's Ready"
King Crimson- "Starless"
Yes- "Perpetual Change"
Van Der Graaf Generator- "A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers"
Maudlin of the Well- "Laboratories of the Invisible World"

The opening or closing track tends to be my favorite track on an album.

In my opinion, a "closer" with "the last piece of an album" are not the same thing, even if it stands as a popular term (or used in certain expressions, like "the album closes with..." instead of "ends with..."). An album's last piece could have the character of a closer, just as easily as it could not (more often actually).

How is (NB I'm just extracting some random examples) Cassandra Gemini the closer of Frances The Mute? It's 30 minutes long, some could say the whole album channels towards it (instead of it being the conclusive part of the rest of the album), it has its own closer, and its parts also have their own closers. How is Ritual a closer, when it's on equal terms, in length and strength, with the other three epics?

I don't actually have such a list in my head. I did however just finished listening to the Crane Wife. I think Sons and Daughters both fits and it is excellent.

I agree entirely with you, that's why I didn't mention none of the obvious choices everybody would choose: Echoes, Supper's Ready, Plague of Lighthouse Keepers, etc.

When I mentioned it by Genesis, I thought the exact same thing as you, it's a definite closer to the great concept.

Indeed, I agree. If you'll notice I wrote Martius/Nauticus II by Pain of Salvation off of Be, which is really their second to last track, while their last track is a few spoken words broken up by a few minutes of silence.

Also, Her Majesty is a great closer.

Good to see someone else mention Cardiacs in this thread. Like I said earlier, I could do a top 5 made up entirely of Cardiacs songs!

I would like to do the same, unfortunately, so far, I've only heard four of their remarkable albums. Cry

I can understand why so few have actually heard a Cardiacs album considering the hefty sum I had to pay for my copy of A Little Man And A House And The Whole World Window, but it was definitely worth it! LOL
