Jimi Hendrix fans, rejoice: An album of previously unreleased studio recordings by the guitar virtuoso will be released in March. Valleys of Neptune,
which arrives on March 9, includes recordings with the original Jimi
Hendrix Experience lineup, primarily from 1969 sessions. The album’s
title track will be released as a single on February 2, beginning a
retrospective of Hendrix’s work that commemorates the 40th anniversary
of his death on September 18, 1970.

As Mr. McDermott says, Jimi just left this whole, completed stuff. Apparently nobody noticed it (while scavenging for studio scraps to record bass/drums over in order to obtain Hendrix music).

Just how did this remain hidden for 40 years -- when obviously every river has been dredged, every sewer has been drained, and every mountain has been climbed, and at least here in the U.S. the depths of every body-cavity of even the most faintly suspicious person has been plumbed -- all in search of new Hendrix recordings? I'm looking forward to hearing it, but it smells like something, and not teen spirit. Edited by jammun - January 11 2010 at 22:00 |

...any material from bygone heros is cool as long as they are not rehashed compilations trying to rake in more bucks....Beatles and Floyd spring to mind

It could have been legal problems, family claiming ownership of the demos, the studio, etc slowing down the release. I wouldn't know if it could delay something for so long, but at least fans will have something to look forward too.

This looks like a good one, thanks to Expeience Hendrix, Jimi's posthumous 'career' is back on track. All the right people are involved, Kramer, Cox etc and no sign of Alan Douglas.
For those who are wondering where the material keeps coming from, Hendrix lead lengthy recording sessions at various studios almost every night for most of his adult life, there is still tons of material out there. I was slightly disappointed that most of the 'new' material was blues, I'd love to hear some more of his fusion work with McLaughlin, Larry Young etc, but if Experience Hendrix can bring in more money for his family and friends ... good! Well I'm pretty skeptical, but if there actually is fresh stuff out there, bring it on.

You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

I've got the posthumous First Rays of the New Rising Sun and it's fairly decent. I get the feeling if he hadn't croaked he might have gone in a more proggy direction.

I think Hendrix was scheduled to jam with Miles but it was cancelled due to Miles demanding too much money. If it had happened I 'm sure Alan Douglas would have put it on Nine to the Universe which was Jimi's 'Jazz' album.

It is encouraging that Kramer is involved. Hey, I'll give the Estate one more chance to get it right. Even some of the marginal old releases (Loose Ends comes to mind) -- provided Alan Douglas was not involved -- have a fair share of decent music.

I have a random vinyl of Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison doing songs together. They sound totally wasted beyond comprehension, but it's still good.

So the album released by Obituary in 1997 was premonitory ?
