Topic: Cymbaline Posted: January 07 2010 at 19:49 |
I was recently enjoying Pink Floyd's song, Cymbaline, and realized that there was a version by Hawkwind on their debut album. I believed both of these interpretations were very good and decided to make a poll.
My question is which version is your favorite? Pink Floyd's (Original) or Hawkwinds (Cover).
I also added an, "other" option just in case there were some other noteworthy bands that have covered this splendid piece.

I have not heard the Hawkwind cover, although I would be interested in doing so. I highly doubt that it would sway my opinion however.

Is a bonus track, on the original there was inexistent (back in 1970).

When I investigated Hawkwind a long time ago, I remember being astonished that they covered PF's soundtrack standout. At the time, I was ignorant of the fact that PF was pretty popular [EDIT note: obviously I mean in their experimental period 69-71] and well known, despite offering very little that would seem popular these days at the time, in the UK, if not America. So I thought "these Hawkwind guys are covering an underground band, how far under must they be?"
But I guess I was wrong and the Floyd continued to sell to the top even after Syd, during that experimental era.
But anyway, the Floyd version is the version. Hawkwind's one is good and even made me recheck if PF had the writing credits on the song and it wasn't a Hawkwind song. That says it all. Can't say I was much impressed with Hawkwind and the only things I've kept on my WMP from them are the amusing Silver Machine and Urban Guerrilla + Cymbaline.

Floyd's version of the song live was great and lasted over 11 minutes

Figured I'd start off the "other" category with the nice version RPWL did on their live album.

Don't know how but I managed to hear the Hawkwind version before I heard Floyd's. And for that shallow reason it's always stayed with me more. Both are obviously great. Haven't heard anyone else do it.

The damage that we do just goes on and on and on but not long enough.

I doesn't happen often that Mason's drumming is better than somebody's else....but this is the case. Also the vocals are not so excellent in hawkwind's version. A good cover, but I've heard a better version in a live exhibition from "Fluido Rosa", an Italian PF cover band featuring and founded by Derek Wilson (former Goblin) that has done some studio works with Keith Emerson, Vangelis and Vollenweider.

RPWL did an excellent cover of this song (can be found on their live album). I like their version even more than the original.
