Definitely only heard about half of these.
 
I'm warming to Nirvana and cooling a bit to Pearl Jam's post-Ten stuff.
 
It's hard to vote.
 
I can't vote for Smashing Pumpkins, though they're clearly my favorite. They were never grunge.

According to Classic Rock Magazine's 1990's special issue they came under both the grunge and alternative rock sections. Also thier music was used in the soundtrack for the grunge era themed rom-com Singles and I continously find them tagged as grunge on networking sites and the mix tapes I own. Does this mean that the level of grunge in the Pumpkins is a more hotly contested issue than I thought? Confused

I'll grant you that Gish has connections to grunge, but truth be told that was always minor in their sound. To call them foremost grunge would be entirely wrong, as their penchant for stadium rock and musical adventurousness set them apart. Though I suppose Pearl Jam's Ten and Mother Love Bone's Apple are quite stadium rock-y. "Alternative rock" and "Grunge" were almost interchangeable. I've just always thought of "grunge" as dirtier, grittier, more of shunning-the-spotlight kind of thing, and the Smashing Pumpkins almost never did that, especially in the early days.

Really? I always felt the grunge tones lasted pretty strongly with the Pumpkins up to Pisces Iscariot, after that it dies a fair bit with Mellon Collie onwards, but that's just what I think, not what I read elsewhere.

Not one mention of Smashing Pumpkins, and all the "grunge" tags on their rateyourmusic album pages are secondary. I'd downplay their congruences to the grunge movement, but I acknowledge there is some influence there.

Hug  May I just ask what genre that the Pumpkins come under predominantly so I can enlighten myself a little more for later conversation 'cause if they're not as connected to grunge as some give the impression of, then they must be just under 'alternative'. Is that right? I have every album with the exception of Adore and I virtually worship them so your answer is crucial!! Embarrassed

Hey, I thought I'd put up a little message for the Alice In Chains fans to note. Mad Season is a one of. Like Temple Of The Dog it is a collaberation project between Layne Staley(A.I.C.) and Mike Mc Cready (Pearl Jam). It is a pretty unique cross between heavy, dirty grunge tones and proggy jazz influences plus some sax, xylophone and an appearance from Screaming Trees' Mark Lanegan thrown in too. Check on Amazon for thier only album 'Above' if you're curious. A guy I was friends with for a while left a copied DVD of them doing a live gig a few years ago and that's how I found them. They rock! May I just say that Mad Season is like Temple... because it's a grunge collaberation project. Not really at all because of who was specifically in it eg. Staley isn't in Temple... Sorry, just had to correct the above sentence 'cause I've missed a comma at a crucial moment! Embarrassed

If you love them, just love them.  Don't sweat the tags.  They're mostly irrelevant.

Yeah, I agree. It's not like I'm the Smashing Pumkins Genre Expert anyway. Embarrassed
 
I guess Alternative Rock, Art Rock, Psychedelic Rock and Gothic Rock would be most appropriate depending on which albums we're talking about.
 
But really it's kind of irrelevant.
