It seems there is a new place in NYC for the Avantgarde and Experimental scene.

The following is taken from here - http://www.thestonenyc.com/

The Birth of The Stone
A New Artists' Space in the East Village - artistic director John Zorn

The Stone is a not-for-profit performance space dedicated to the
EXPERIMENTAL and AVANT-GARDE.

All expenses are paid for by the MUSIC itself - through the online sale of special Limited Edition CDs released yearly on the Tzadik label. Each month a different musician is responsible for curating the programs with 100% of the nightly revenue going directly to the musicians.

The second issue Benefit for The Stone presents the Fred Frith/Chris Cutler set from the Henry Cow reunion weekend of December 2006. Recorded live at The Stone, this limited edition CD is available online only through the Downtown Music Gallery, Tzadik and Ipecac. All proceeds from the sale of this CD will go directly to support The Stone. Only with your help can we keep The Stone alive.

The WATER SURGEONS won Dublin Harbor's Lobstar Cage "synchronized brass" awared in 1987. This "elite quartet" generates a lurid, expansive chromatic canvas. Roseman, Garchik, Hasselbring and Sorey demonstrate a healthy lack of regard for much of nothing, be it diatonic or trombonist. Sadly, they seem to prefer to strap things on, inclusive of accordions, cheap guitar and a drumset, resulting in a sentimental morass of the harmolodic variety. Hoping the SURGEONS present their extemporal acoustic "A" material for their debut at the STONE! And leave that weird loud dubby stuff in Brooklyn. with "Guest Surgeon" Barney "Scratch" Mcall on found devices and ambience. -Hiawatha Tyler O'Stewart

The Stone is way too avant for me.  And I usually consider myself to be pretty avant.

Never thought I would hear these words pass my lips - well not exactly passing my lips as I'm typing - but I wouldn't mind spending some time nyc! You planning on catching any of these?

Personally I would love to see this one:

"10 pm
EKG with Bhob Rainey
Ernst Karel (analog electronics) Kyle Bruckmann (oboe, english horn, analog electronics) Bhob Rainey (soprano saxophone, recordings)
Bhob Rainey, of nmperign, contributes “a kind of living silence that is apt to wreak havoc with the perception of time.” ekg.klingt.org"

Bhob Rainey is a pretty 'out there' sax player. He does a lot of work with Trumpet player Grey kelley (which is the make up of nmperign), who just happens to be one of my favourite improv trumpet player. Could possibly bore to sh*t out of you, but I think it would be a pretty interesting live show.

Here is his myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/lloydlyson Fold Out is the most active piece on the page.

-------------------------------------------

This one also caught my eye:

"
5/16 Wednesday (CB)
8 and 10 pm
Stevie Wishart, Christoph Kurzmann and Werner Dafeldecker
Stevie Wishart (hurdy gurdy, violin) Christoph Kurzmann (lloopp, clarinet) Werner Dafeldecker (bass, tape delay)
Scintillating sounds from Australian and Austrian icons of contemporary improvisation"

Sounds interesting, I'll look into those two.

I'm actually going to see a show not in the Stone, but somewhere else where Bone (Didkovsky, Hopper and Roualt) will play along with Doctor Nerve.

In the Stone, I hope to see one of the Zeena Parkins shows.

@ Jake/Rileydog22 - Really? Too Avant? Shocked I thought you're into all of this and all seems natural to you by now.
Let me send you something that after listening to it, everything will seem normal.

Anyway, if anyone is going to any of these, let me know.

I know that there's plenty going on there that I would like, but I don't have any idea what it would be; I recognize a grand total of two musicians' names on that list, and they are Zorn and Parkins.

I'd be glad to accept recommendations and/or samples though.

Most of the names are not familiar to me too. So I just look them up in Google or in other prog/avant websites.

EDIT - I thought you initially meant that the music is too avantgarde for your taste and was surprised given what I read from you until now. Smile

Most of the names go over my head as well.

This also looks quiet interesting:

"5/11 Friday (MM)
8 pm
EKG
Ernst Karel (valve/slide trumpet, pocket trumpet, contact mic, etc) Kyle Bruckmann (oboe, english horn, suona, etc)
Austere improvisation, and a realization of Morton Feldman's Oboe and Orchestra (1976) for oboe and analog electronics."

One, because I'm interested in modern trumpet works, and secondly the mention of Morton Feldman. He is one of my favourite 20th Century composers, quiet minimal. I could send some samples if people are interested.

Over here in Australia we are having a three day improv festival, unfortunately I'm not going to be attending because of work commitment. Probably the biggest Avant festival we've sported since the What is music festival went down the drain.

Adam,

With regards to Morton Feldman, I recently bought this:

Still haven't listened to it.
What do you think? And what other releases should I get?

As for that Festival, it sounds great! Too bad you can't make it.

Assaf, from my experiences Hathut does a good job with their re-issues, so any discs from their label would be a safe bet. I really like Indeterminate Music (2001), a really quiet disc, but if you spend some time with it tis a very rewarding disc: http://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/morton_feldman/indeterminate_music/

Performed by The Herb Robertson Sextet. The sense of exhilaration that characterize Herb Robertson’s experiences under improvisational patterns is heightened for his new sextet as storytellers by his complicated and sincere intellectual and emotional active exertion, and by the intensity of struggling with a creative process under the pressure of a steady beat. From the outset of this performance the improvisers will enter into an artificial world of time in which reactions to the unfolding events of Stephanie must be immediate. The consequence of their music and action will be irreversible.
