My vote is for Petrucci.  Howe and Fripp are great, and Zappa (on top of being a genius at songwriting and arranging) could tear it up.  But if we're just talking about guitar skills, Petrucci has them beat in my opinion.

I went for David Gilmour, since he is one of my all-time favourite guitarists. If I had to pick another, it'd probably be Robert Fripp or Steve Howe, though.

I voted in this poll a while back but I don't remember who it was for. It was either for Fripp or Hackett. I like Hackett's playing more but Fripp is the musician I respect the most for always progressing music.

Good call!  Lifeson is one of the most underated guitarists of all time.  I think he just tends to get outshone by Geddy Lee and Neal Peart.  (Not to say they're better musicians... just that they, by and large, have bigger names.)

Ya, I'd go with Lifeson as well, and from the list I do like 1) Rabin, 2) Hackett 3)Howe.

I love all of them, but I am starting to see just how awesome Zappa is.

I voted for Robert Fripp because he almost single handedly invented a style, approach and sound to guitar playing that even when imitated by his many followers, can only be described as Frippian or Fripp like etc. He is also one of the few guitarists out there who never seems to have resorted to any time-worn guitaristic clichés in his output. (even on blues changes or bog standard riffing, what he layers over the top sounds like Martian scales or modes from Venus)

Why is Alex Lifeson not in the list? To me it's:

1. David Gilmour
2. Alex Lifeson
3. Steve Hackett

I think Fripp is probably more technically skilled than Zappa when it comes to playing guitar, but, there's something about Zappa's solos that is just magical.

Gilmour's always been my favourite, so many amazing solos full of so much feeling. 'Comfortably Numb' is the obvious one with 'On the Turning Away' being another epic. I saw Steve Hackett live in Falmouth, UK recently and what an amazing tone he has. Latimer's solo on 'Ice' is breathtaking and I think underrated. Not that I dislike shred guitar in any way but these guys show them that it's all about the tone and the feeling, speed comes second.
