Here we have a lot of radio hits from different eras, styles and genres. The only common thing about them is the long these are for radio standards. Now, here's the trick:
You have 300 persons that never in their life have heard something longer than 3 minutes songs... you were choosed to show them a long song and you HAVE to make them get it, or enjoy it... what song do you think is better to a first listening...??? you can choose the one you like the most, but mantain clear that you have to succede in make those people like the song you choose...
Enough... so... which "long" mainstream epic song do you pick...??? Don't forget to explain your choose...
![]() This gonna be interesting... enjoy...

Where's Guns n' Roses' "Estranged"? Easily the best and one of my favorite non-prog rock epic....
I wouldn't include Metallica or The Doors here... they are prog-related and therefore in PA after all. And The Beatles, and Led Zeppelin. This thread has failed... ![]() |

Nah...!!! non of the mainstream people consider the Doors progressive... the same to Metallica and I don't need to say it about The Beatles... only in PA those are considered Progressive... no... is not a failure..!!! or you want to start talking about religion...???!!!

I love "Hotel California," but I voted for the tripartite masterpiece "Stairway to Heaven."

I think the only reason I am not tired of it is that it has not been played in the radio as far as I can remember. So, my vote goes to this one. Edited by Luke. J - December 17 2009 at 23:10 |

I don't know if the Queen Haters love that song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=njiUFtrFky8 {edited cause embedding is disabled for this} And yes, all of these are mainstream. There are many others I would've liked to include such as Santana's "Samba Pa Ti", CSN's "Wooden Ships", Cream's "Tales of Brave Ulysses", Yes' "Roundabout", as a classic rock radio staple, Donovan's "Hurdy Gurdy Man", Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb" etc. Is The Byrd's "Eight Miles High" long enough (radio format version, the live at Fillmore East version is over ten minutes). Don't know how well all of those would fit. Of the poll choices: "Light my Fire". As for why, it was just magical for me the first time I heard it. It's one of those tracks, like Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit" or Cream's "Those Were the Days" and some that I've listed above that just had this really strong effect on me and others that I knew. Stairway to Heaven, easily
there's a reason it's become a cliche of everyone liking it also Hey Jude is just a 3 minute song with a 4 or so minute outro of the same thing |

All of the Above. By Transatlantic.
Seriously, I'd go with Stairway. It's the most known and it's probably the most mainstream/non-repetitive song on the list.

Stairway to Heaven by far (though there are many other great ones in the list).
Special mention to Dylan's Rolling Stone. Did you know that was originally a 20 minutes long epic, back in 1965? ![]() |

Bohemian Rhapsody from this list but I feel like Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding by Elton John is missing here as far a classic rock epics go.

I'll pick Bohemian Rhapsody, although I still have a soft spot for both November Rain and Stairway to Heaven

I forgot about "Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding." That would get my vote if it were here, but of the list I'll go with "Stairway to Heaven." I also laugh at the fact that I considered none of these even close to "epic" length. |

I'm gonna have to go with Light My Fire. The Doors have a lot of popular appeal around here, seems like it's probably going to appeal to a lot of people who don't listen to prog or anything like that.
