^^^Yeah, I woulda put Eric Idle in there, for sure, but I definitely would have filled out both the Stooges and Python.

I voted for Steven Wright. Funniest stand-up show I've seen

Tough call this certainly. I voted for Woody Allen (as he's never used humour as vehicle for any hidden agenda)

Billy Connolly was a close second (ditto with the absence of any didactic element)

Although I love Bill Hicks dearly, his lapses into hippy cosmology were irritating and his belief that drugs aid the creative process for musicians is plain facile e.g. throw out all your Beatles albums if you're anti-drugs etc) Carlin suffered from these same conceits although perhaps to a lesser degree. Both men were riotously funny and thought provoking for all that.

I'll go for Jerry Seinfield, but Woody Allen is close.

Dave Chappelle. Very underrated guy.

My Python fanboyness compels me to vote Cleese. David, Colbert, Fey, Allen, Hicks, and Chapman all up there too.

On the poll, I picked Bill Hicks but was tempted by Larry David.  My all time favorite comedian is either Louis C.K. or Doug Stanhope.  Neil Hamburger gets an honorary mention for being so over the top.

Edit: Early Dave Attell is phenomenal as well.

Carlin all the way. The Pythons are great collectively. I don't even get that much out of Faulty Towers. the best Python on his own is Palin doing his travel gig.
