Oh no!
Pim was great. He was very important for Kayak in the early years and quite some of the early classics were written by him. And he was a great guy! |

I am not familiar with Kayak's work but have been meaning to try them out for a while. This is indeed sad news though. He was young too.

I can't believe there are only 4 reactions in this thread. Pim made some incredible prog songs, like Lovely Luna from the first Kayak album (See See The Sun). An absolute prog classic!

Kayak's one of those bands that definitely fits into the underrated label.
Hey, file this under the perils of having a big collection. Thanks to this thread I just found out that I had never logged in Kayak Kayak and it has been out of my circulation for about four years. It now gets the new CD treatment for a while. It's been on my digital player though, giving it a spin now. Edited by Slartibartfast - November 25 2009 at 08:28 |

Seconded. Forever is a Lonely Thought, another Pim Koopman composition, is nearly as good.

R.I.P. While I know only 3-4 albums of their catalogue I can only say sad news about the drummer Pim Koopman death. |

I only have a compilation CD of Kayak's early work, but it is truly excellent. Calling them "neo prog" just isn't fair. They started releasing their own Dutch variant of early Genesis (and other classic prog) BACK IN THE 1970s and it's great fun! Koopman must be admired for being there from the very beginning.

We actually have them as crossover. I was just reading a review of Kayak Kayak by King Friso saying they are symphonic. Anyhow, if all you have is a compilation and like it, I'd highly recommend exploring the whole catalog, starting with the early stuff. Certainly one of the under-appreciated bands around here.

Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

I'm glad there came some more responses.
"They Get To Know Me" (second eponymous album) is another classic, which he co - wrote with former Dutch secretary of state (and Kayak alumnus) Cees van Leeuwen. A wonderful track, muddy, mysterious, adventurous, melodious with biting vocals of Max Werner. Pim Koopman was not as prolific in writing songs for Kayak, but his compositions were not any less than those of Ton Scherpenzeel . Too bad he left Kayak so soon because of health reasons. |

Pim Koopman wrote some great songs for Kayak and he struck me as a really fantastic drummer - lots of nuances to his playing. Kayak as a band consistently did some great stuff from beginning to now, from prog to rock-pop, so you should all check them out. Rest in peace Pim, your death is very tragic indeed, and best wishes to friends and family.

I gave Kayak's debut album (See See The Sun) another spin tonight. Great band, and generally spoken they were best when Pim Koopman and Ton Scherpenzeel were still (almost) equally important in writing the compositions for the band.
Musicbandit has a good point. Pim was a skilled drummer also. We shouldn't forget that. |

So sorry to hear about Pim Koopman. When I was in high school, during the early 1970s,I became a huge fan of Prog by way of my older brother and the great college radio stations in Boston. Kayak was the first group I heard outside of "The Big 4" that made me aware of the fact that other groups made this type of music, besides "you know who". Sure enough, there was a copy of the LP("See See The Sun") at New England Music City on Boylston St. that had my name on it. I bought it with some $$ I'd gotten for Christmas. I'll never forget it. That record holds a special place in my heart. Little did I know that there was a teeming universe of prog rock waiting to be heard. My condolences to Pim's family and friends.
