Just so you know just because they are original and unique doesn't make them good, the only good and unique band I can think of at the moment is Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Lift Yours Fists Like Antennas to Heaven just hits the right button with me

1. Maudlin Of The Well - Its rare that you come across bands with such range and capabilities such as motW. 2. Porcupine Tree - Blended a lot of music into each of their albums, and always suprise me with what they bring out next (even in small parts with the latest offering) 3. Opeth - Blend many genres together seemlessly, and they do this in a way which seems natural, fluid and listenable. |

Besides the opinion that they aren't really original.
![]() Anyways, for my list:
1. The Mars Volta
2. Godspeed You! Black Emperor
3. Atheist
4. Tool
5. Behold... The Arctopus
6. Cynic
7. The Locust (not prog here, but hot damn!)
8. Sigur Ros
9. Devin Townshend
10. Wolves in the Throne Room
It pains me not to include Meshuggah, but as someone pointed out they were already around in the 80s.

I agree with Pocupine Tree or Riverside, but Pain of Salvation is one of the most original and innovative prog metal bands ever. In a sea of modern prog bands trying to sound like they're from the 70's, or cloning Dream Theater or Porcupine Tree, Pain of Salvation is not like any of these bands. They have their own blend of melodic progressive rock, metal, gothic-influenced sections, and an excellent vocalist to top it all off. -Jeff |

I really enjoy Pain of Salvation, but to me they sound sort of like a standard progressive metal band. Albeit they are extremely emotional and have some great musicians.

That's where I disagree. They don't show their chops by shredding for 10 minutes, or creating 30-minute epics. Think about BE. That's one of the most ambitious things ever done by a prog metal band! If you think about Dream Theater or Symphony X, all of their albums have a similar style, and they don't take as many chances (I still love DT to death though). While I won't say PoS is as original as Opeth or Athiest, I think they definitely are not your standard prog metal band by any stretch of the imagination IMO. |

^ We may have to agree to disagree, but just taking one element out of a genre doesn't really make someone unique for me. Aside from extended soloes they're pretty standard IMO.
And who says they don't show off? "Handful of Nothing" and "Nihil Morari" are really complex and have some killer playing. Of course I'm definitely not as familiar with Pain of Salvation as you.

Well that just comes with being a prog band. You can't be a prog musician without being a little bit of a show-off ![]() |

There's some good artists here, but i would not include Nemo and Karamakanic in the category of the most original an unique bands. I adore these two but Nemo have taken on the school of some other neo-prog band and Karmakanic is a complement of Flower Kings. |

Shoddy tapes of hucksters blowing raspberry noises into a machine does not an album make. Face it, these are 90s bands. |
