You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

You know, that's a really good question. Of the top of my head there there really wasn't much that was innovative coming out. Lots of artists did pass me by. More than a few that I liked already weren't boldly going where no one had gone before. The uhm short lived Ten Seconds? Most of the new artists in my collection got started prior to 1990. There have been some arrivals in this decade that have impressed me, but I don't find them doing much that's is particularly original/unique.
Maybe I'm just getting too old.

Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

I would add Toby Driver i.e. Maudlin/Kayo as one more.
Mars Volta was an obvious miss for me.

Dead Can Dance were well established pre-1990, no?

I expect(/hope) that is the last time we see The Flower Kings mentioned in this thread. As for my own list, I haven't heard too many post-1989 bands so my list consists of one. The Mars Volta

I just hope people don't just list bands that they like here. That's not the intention of this thread.
As for me:
1. Dream Theater (Images & Words was groundbreaking) 2. The Mars Volta (I actually can't stand them, but they are very unique) 3. Athiest (The first tech/death/jazz metal combo) 4. Death (constantly pushed the boundaries of metal) 5. Pain of Salvation (the most original straightforward prog metal band!) 6. Opeth (one of the most innovative prog metal bands in existence!)
