While I've got this thread back to life, what are your thoughts on The Whirlwind?

Great review! It pretty much sums up my feelings about The Whirlwind as well. Such an incredible masterpiece of an album, it is climbing up my list of favorite albums of all time. It is the perfect blend between four of the greatest members of the current progressive rock scene. Definitely the best album of the year, if not the decade. I'm just blown away by it.

I really hope they continue on and make even more music together, because this album has solidified their place as my favorite band. I will travel anywhere in the US to see them live, I can't wait for that!

I don't know if you have the deluxe edition, but if you've seen the bonus DVD, Mike Portnoy did mention touring, so I'm looking forward to thatBig smile

^Yeah, I do have the deluxe edition and I got really excited when Mike mentioned touring. Also, I just read this from Mike Portnoy on his forum:

"As most of you know, it's looking VERY likely that Transatlantic will hit the road with some shows in support of the newly released reunion album "The Whirlwind"....it looks like we found a nice little window in mine, Pete's, Neal's and Roine's schedules to make this happen in the Spring.
So we are currently looking into doing some select shows in major cities on both sides of the Atlantic during this period (it will be our first truly "transatlantic" tour - as we only did the US for SMPTe in 2000 and only did Europe/UK for Bridge Across Forever in 2001)
Details of these shows should start to firm up soon, so stay tuned..."

If it's under 500 bucks, I'd find a way to pay for it no matter what...

but of course, it won't be more than 30 or 40 bucks probably.

500 would be a bit much...

Though 30 to 40 wouldn't be bad.

what can I say about Neal Morse that hasn't been told...
God bless him.
I have every single official work he has put out. Ok, I cannot afford to buy all his demos and stuff...

As for the new Transatlantic album. Might be THE album of 2009. I'll decide in some days. Has to challenge Crack The Skye...

MY RESPECT.
Do you know the difference between who and what you are?

I think I have bought "Testimony" - not listened to it yet - I also have "Snow" and I don't think I got round to listening to that. I need to retire or win the lottery so that I can catch up with listening to all the cd's I have bought and never listened to................
My mother has become a born-again Christian...I introduced myself to some of her new circle of friends and told them that I was a follower of satan, but only because 666 is my lucky number and that my wife had found a birth mark (in a very private place) that was sort of like the one featured in the Omen films....
and I kept a straight face too................

He's not the Messiah.......He's just a very naughty boy............Big smile

Finished listening to Testimony - CD1 not too bad....But CD2?
More mentions of Jesus than fookin Billy Graham.
Great musician, I'll concede but an hour in his company would just reinforce my opinion that American schools are failing their children by allowing religious loon-bombs to indoctrinate young minds.
Teach them how lucky they are to be alive....not fookin look forwards to oblivion with a false promise that a sky-fairy will let you into a man-made fictional utopia....
Forza Darwin............

Yep, Morse's religious lyrics can sometimes be pretty annoying. I don't mind it in small doses or if it's not terribly preachy, but as you mentioned, the second disc of Testimony can sometimes be too much. That said, I still really like Testimony (and his other solo albums).

Regarding this matter, I was kinda hoping The Whirlwind didn't have religious lyrics. It would have been fun to hear something else from Neal for a change. Fortunately, the lyrics of The Whirlwind aren't preachy, so it's really not a big problem. The main reason I'm hoping he would write non-religious lyrics sometimes is that I love the playful and lighthearted lyrics of the early Spock's Beard songs. God isn't as fun as Senor Valasco.
