Anyone who has listened to Tubular Bells also knows that Oldfield can growl pretty well.

@ Lucas, like i said some parts of opeth songs are written for growls , and it just wouldnt work with clean singing (see my example of the intro to 'the Baying of the Hounds'). Same with death metal. If some1 were to come up to me and just growl then no i probably wouldnt like it, but if its an integral part of a song i love, then of course im going to like it. If some of my fave opeth songs exchanged the small parts of growling to clean then it would change the song and make them worse in my opinion. Too much growling and growling for the sake of it gets on my tits, thats why im not a big fan of bands like Immortal and cradle of filth, because there isnt really much clean singing at all. |

First, I was serious.
Then, I growled. |

My ranking: 1. Oldfield, 2. Jackson, 3. Åkerfeldt. All are good, but Åkerfeldt is the least best.

Sorry for the triple post, but I want to say: Indeed! Mike is my favourite but I'm actually a metal fan, including extreme metal. Only Opeth aren't among my favourite metal bands.
Again, indeed! Mike does have a few new age albums, but that only started in the mid-90s. And by no means everything he did since then has been new age either. Before that, not at all. |

At least someone remember 'bout Jackson and even put him at second place! So, it looks Michael is more proggy than Opeth in some places of the world

This is a poll? Count me info for Oldfield. "Oldfield is good at what he does; but what he does is stock material." No disrespect to Opeth/Akerfeldt, but it's a very bad comparison- Oldfield's composed in more styles than almost anyone labeled 'prog', everything from Incantations to Songs of Distant Earth can hardly be labelled "stock" in any sense. And honestly I don't find everything Oldfield does as memorable or fantastic- but he has far more accolades than any more modern composer / artist. |

That's an opinion; not a fact. Opeth mixes Folk, Jazz, Classic Rock and Metal all the time in their music; not to mention the fact that their music is far superior to many in terms of technical prowess and composition. You say no modern composer or artist can match Oldfeild, I say different. Big time. |

Absolute are right in what Oldfield have done, he truly composes in more styles that many prog rock bands, and the fact is in the albums themselves.
And p0mt3 i'm curious to know what other modern artist can do what Oldfield have done?

But seriously, how can Oldfield be ahead in this poll? Is the world going mad?

Open your eyes, it's full of surprise, everyone lies,

You people who say that really crack me up. Are you even really familiar with Mike's work? Ommadawn? Amarok? Incantations? |

It pisses me more, because of the arrogance that it implies.
I don't care if we are comparing a good with a bad artist according to me, each person is entitled to his/her own taste.
Why must we vote for Akerfeld or be mad?
Can't each one of us decide who is better?
For God's sake, a bit of respect for te taste of each one of us.
Iván

I read the above replies, and decide to apologize. My original post was horribly biased towards Mikael. Actually it was part of my strategy: I intentionally called Oldfield "new age", and said he would lose by 500 votes. That's mean. I did so because I wanna enrage the Oldfield fans and make them vote for Oldfield. That's my endgame. But it wasn't the right thing to do. Sorry.
