Oldfield doesn't growl.

Now seriously, Mike Oldfield is a classic with at least 4 fantastic albums.

Iván

Edit; Isn't qualifying Mike Oldfield as New Age an attempt of manipulation? Wink

Paganinio I'm not a metal hater I just hate the cookie monster growls on Opeth albums:) I would listen to Opeth if not for the vocals which destroy it for me. Besides there are few people in music period who are as talented as Mike Oldfield!
A GREAT YEAR FOR PROG!!!

i hated the growls at first.... but for some reason i cant explain i now like them...as long as they are used appropriately. take the beginning of 'the baying of the hounds'....that would not work as anything other than growls for me these days. I mean he isnt writing in growls for the sake of it, the songs are designed and written like that for a reason, so you have to take them for how they are imo

I was listening to Amarok on my way home from work today so voting was pretty easy.
Oldfield, hands down.

I believe your expectations were exagerated, the fight is close.

BTW: The people who like Oldfield more is not vnecesarilly Metal haters, and BTW: Oldfiekld is not a New Age artist, Tubular bells is a classic album as well as Amarok and Omadawn....Saying Oldfield is a New Age artist is klike saying Wakeman is also.

Plus Oldfield is a complete muti-instrumentaluist, to a level few artists can't even dream.

so, 29/29 for a moment! Once again, I believe that Oldfield and Opeth are too different, but great in their own fields. And I agree, that it's naive to think, that heavy metal heads will vote against Oldfield till victory. Just dont's think that people older than 15 could be metal heads at all ( I am not speaking about serious heavy music lovers, as myself Wink). So, it's not sport. If you love music, you usually love any good music.

Let's see: Classic 70s artist vs. some modern nobody... umm, the choice is obvious.

Just want to reply to last two reviews:

I don't think, that most important question is are you "classic" ( who told, that Oldfield is classic?), or modern. Most important question is what is your music for a moment. I voted for Opeth, because they are one of rare really important MODERN band in prog-rock. I like some Oldfield works as well, but his time is gone long ago, and even few hist best works are questionable classics. But for sure, who knows, what all we will think about today's Opeth music. Time will show.

Lets see, Mike Olfield was 19 when he went to Richard Branson and tod him "I want to record an album in which I play all the instruments".

Richard Branson was creating a label (Virgin Records) and he requuired a great artist...He took the risk and wasn't disappointed, the kid made an outstanding album that made of Virgin Records an important label.

Willian Friedkin was making a movie (The Exorcist) and wanted the perfect theme, he had listened many themes, but he only required a listen of Tubular Bells and went for it.

I believe Mike Oldfield was one of the first Progressive Artists to receive recognition by the critic and public in USA for Tubular Bells.

When he reached N° 1 uuin UK, he took tthe place from Hergest Ridge by........Mike Oldfield, who along with The Beatles and Bob Dylan is the only artist who displaced himself from N° 1.

Aren't this enough reasons to consider him a classic?

Asrtist indeed.

No such thing as a modern classic.

Tough poll because I don't particularly care of either of the three but don't dislike any of them either. I haven't gone beyond Tubular Bells and I wasn't blown away by it but I still liked it more than Opeth or Michael Jackson.  And I am no snob hating on a pop phenomenon because I am in awe of Jackson's voice and while I don't really like the music, it's infinitely better than the current crop, at least it was invigorating.  Opeth....decent band but I get bored of them rather too often for my liking.  When I want growls in my prog I will listen to Univers Zero. Tongue

Great result 34/34 for the moment. I think the idea to compare "classic"with "modern metal" is not interesting but itself, because there are too many marginal moments in poll, not only music. It's pity, but it's life.

I voted for Good Ol'Oldfield, but only because of a natural reflex.  Anyway, I think this poll is just another twisted poll about oranges VS. apples.

You mean you "tolerate" them ? How one can like growls ? I listen to a lot of death metal bands but I would never say I like the growls...
