I'll freely admit I am not the world greatest programmer - if I was I would be a games programmer or some other high-flying software mechanic and not a lowly engineer... however, I have been programming since the late 70s in a variety of languages, from raw machine code (if the processor is simple enough) to rather misguided attempts at graphics based 4GLs... Languages such as FORTRAN, COBOL, coral, pascal, basic, Modula-2, HTML, css, java, asp.net, c, c++ and a variety of machine specific propriety languages hold no mystery to me. But here I am at 3:30 am on a Sunday morning after 12 solid hours of staring at a p*xy PC screen trying to figure out why the fk I cannot perform a simple task of using vb.net to suck an XML "database" into Excel and plot a few (well 167) crappy graphs. I mean - XML is supposed to make life simple, but for the love of all things precious, why the fk did the mrns at W3C invent such a ridiculously verbose syntax and then give it to fking muppets (who haven't quite grasped the concept of object oriented languages yet) at MicrSft to code! For example: objAdapter.SelectCommand = New System.Data.OleDb.OleDbCommand(strSQL, objConn) ... clear as sodding mud... at night... wearing a blindfold... in a coal-celler... while still under the affects of those drops the optician gives you that dilate the pupils so people afterwards think you're pissed or stoned or just plain mad.
I think to would have been quicker for me to print these 180MB XML files out on paper and use scissors and glue to organise them into a life-size papier-mâché model of an elephant on roller-skates juggling three hippopotomi.
At least I'd have something to show my boss and his customer on Monday.
Oh well, back to it... now where did I put that bottle of PVA glue?...

Surely the meteorically successful rise of information technology has been standardisation (or b*****disation ) of various codes and components?
Back in the early 90's through various contacts and associates i gained access to my store's hallowed computer nerve centre, where ordering stock could be made easier for me by not having to rely on aforesaid associates and colleagues within the system, and therefore me not having to pester them all day tweaking complicated orders and stock "variations" (people bringing the blooming thing back ).
My trusted colleagues taught me and left me to the intricacies of an MS-DOS based stock system, which i managed to get my head round a bit..... well, enough to do my "bits". It occurred to me that how such a system could be simplified, messing about with GOTO and other strange commands becoming very tedious and slow.....time travel to 1998, i take up a new post in my College, induction training in IT and bingo! a clever chap called Bill Gates from Silicone Valley had invented a spiffing new system called "Windows", where all my computer prayers had been answered!
I took to this like a duck to water, got my ECDL, designed my own web site, and fell in with all the College's systems, found some great sites to play on like Ebay and PA and never looked back, everything you wanted to know was there, up to date and groaning with information - out go all the books!
Now in 2009 you would have thought standardisation would be the norm, except for a few stubborn platforms such as Mackintosh and Linux, and Windows 7 keeps nagging us to "upgrade"... and with the various codes and programs Dean coloufully illustrates has any thing changed at all...?

If I were Australian, I'd be ranting pretty hard now about how your government treats you like babies regarding video games. Wait a few weeks and Modern Warfare 2 will be banned. |

I replied to an email that came from my wife's cousine to my wife (but in our email inbox). Transgression of privacy. Yes !
Trumped by the message of the email that can be found copied here . Yes ! There are a number of very valid debates around the flu & the vaccine. This is not one of them. Please join the fight against nonsense that makes informed discussion worthless " The Swine Flu Conspiracy:A Plan to Commit Mass Murder. The Underground Health Reporter(TM) "A
chilling tale of conspiracy to commit mass murder by those who are
responsible for protecting human lives. The Swine Flu Conspiracy: A Plan
to Commit Mass Murder -- coming to a town near you." The above reads like a suspenseful trailer for a blockbuster Hollywood movie like "The Manchurian Candidate" or "Enemy of the State." But it's not a movie at all. It's a TRUE STORY that's happening right now. The World Health Organization, which has been predicting a massive swine flu pandemic that will infect one-third of the entire world's population, has every reason to be 100% certain of its prediction. It's because the swine flu virus is about to be deliberately unleashed upon the unsuspecting public. If you find this hard to believe, here's proof: A medical journalist named Jane Burgermeister has recently filed criminal charges with the FBI against the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations (UN), and several of the highest ranking government and corporate officials concerning their attempts to commit mass murder via the swine flu. [Source: NaturalNews] This comes in the wake of charges filed last April against US-based pharmaceutical company, Baxter AG, and Avir Green Hills Biotechnology. Baxter was recently connected to the disturbing scandal involving flu vaccines. Several sources, including the Times of India, reported that last December, Baxter inserted deadly live avian flu viruses into vaccines that were distributed to 18 countries around the world to be injected into patients as "flu shots" -- allegedly as a deliberate act to trigger a pandemic and profit from the sale of vaccines. However, a batch of the tainted vaccines was first tested on ferrets in the Czech Republic before being shipped out for injection into humans. Every one of the ferrets died -- and the SHOCKING discovery was made. Since the contamination of the vaccination couldn't be blamed on an "honest mistake," newspapers immediately questioned whether the events were part of a conspiracy to deliberately provoke a pandemic, following up on accusations already made by health officials in other countries. Jane Burgermeister contends that the WHO, the UN and high-ranking corporate government officials conspired with each other (and others) in a covert international program involving the pharmaceutical companies Baxter and Novartis. The conspiracy entailed the bioengineering and then releasing of lethal biological agents -- specifically the "bird flu" virus and the "swine flu virus" in order to accelerate the pandemic by making the virus ever more virulent(with the addition of the Avian flu). This would then make an otherwise mild swine flu outbreak disastrous enough to justify forced mass vaccinations. Such a forced mass vaccination program would rake in billions of dollars in vaccine revenues -- while the hoards of people who are vaccinated run the risk of suffering serious injury or even death in massive numbers! Can you REALLY be forced to take the swine flu vaccine? Most people have never heard of the international health regulations and the national pandemic plans that ALLOW mandatory flu vaccinations. Most people think that no one can be FORCED to take the swine flu vaccine. Wrong! Did you know ... that in the event of a Pandemic Level 6 emergency declaration, you would be required to follow the orders of the World Health Organization? In such an emergency, the WHO has the authority to force anyone (and that includes you) to be vaccinated and also to be quarantined. Under such circumstances, it would be a CRIMINAL OFFENSE if you refuse to be vaccinated. So what's the worst thing that could happen if you were to be vaccinated? For starters, if the vaccine you receive happens to be laced with live avian flu viruses, which Baxter has demonstrated itself capable of doing without being penalized -- the vaccine would be virulent enough to kill you. This is the basis for Burgermeister's charges against the WHO and UN for conspiracy to commit mass murder. Furthermore, if the swine flu vaccine doesn't kill you, you may have an increased CANCER RISK. According to German lung specialist Wolfgang Wodarg (who is also the chairman of the health committee in the German parliament and European Council), the swine flu vaccine's nutrient solution contains CANCEROUS cells from animals. It therefore stands to reason that injection of the vaccine might also cause cancer in humans. The swine flu vaccine contains shockingly higher concentrations of squalene than was used in the anthrax vaccines, which caused hundreds of thousands of troops to suffer the catastrophic effects of Gulf War Syndrome. Furthermore, the swine flu vaccine, which is being rushed to market without the appropriate testing and evaluation, may cause a repeat of the swine flu vaccine catastrophe of 1976, in which people died or developed crippling Guillain-Barré Syndrome or paralysis as a result of the experimental vaccine. In the event that forced vaccinations are implemented, what can YOU do? You can just say "No!" Would it make you a criminal offender -- and possibly land you in jail -- if you refused the vaccine? If large numbers of people refuse the vaccination, the government would NOT have the resources to enforce a mandatory vaccination -- nor have the capacity to imprison hundreds of thousands (or millions) of people. That's why it's necessary to urge as many people as possible to refuse the swine flu vaccine. Should you refuse the vaccine, you definitely WON'T be alone. According to research reported in the August 25 issue of the British Medical Journal... ... more than 50% of doctors and nurses in public hospitals would refuse the swine flu vaccine because they're concerned about its side effects, and have doubts about its efficacy. And according to a Fox News poll conducted in August, the MAJORITY of Americans now believe that the swine flu vaccine may be DEADLIER than the swine flu virus itself. Without a vaccine, what can YOU do to protect yourself from the swine flu virus? There's a natural, scientifically proven method for creating an environment in the body which is uninhabitable by the swine flu virus, as well as other disease micro-organisms, germs and bacteria. It involves a natural oxygenating substance that makes your body immune to swine flu and virtually all diseases. I urge you to watch the 7-minute video titled "The Swine Flu Virus Cure They Don't Want You to Know About" at http://tinyurl.com/aadomcsf . This is the video the pharmaceutical industry does NOT want you to watch. Why? Because it threatens the billions of dollars they could potentially make from the swine flu vaccine. Don't forget to forward this article to everyone you know because no one can escape exposure to the swine flu virus this flu season. It's that important. You might even end up saving someone's life." |

Kind of interesting, my VB.Net teacher uses the phrase clear as mud all the time in class. I have her for a programming logic class as well, I don't think she says it nearly as much in that class. I do hate my programming logic class more though, I get to use a language called JustBasic, which feels like it takes the limitations of TI-Basic. I have only used Python to see what it feels like, but it seems like a nicer language. |

I'm mad!
I bought a new CD-player which is of great quality, but somehow in between the songs there's a one minute break. I've called the support service and they said it was because of the quality of the sound that the thing needed to read every song for a second. It wasn't mentioned anywhere when I bought the thing. enjoy listening to Dark SIde Of The Moon this way.

I think you've been fobbed-off with a bs answer - even if that was a truthful answer (which I very much doubt - the gap in a track on a CD is silent, but not empty of data - the player is reading the disc constantly from the moment you start playing and even if it does pre-read 1 second of data, it will do it over the silent bit too). Take it back and ask for a refund as being not fit for purpose.

Have you tried ripping the disc and pasting all the tracks together via something like Audacity? Then you could burn that and play it without any gaps.

Yeah, I'm going to ask for refund tomorrow, as the company's service is closed now. They told me the problem might be helped when I updated the CD-player by putting some USB stick with files in it. I did that, but nothing has solved. The sound is very good though, but I get extremely frustrated every time the gap comes in.
That would mean I should rip most of my CD's as many have at least one song that segues into another. That's not going to do it for me. Edited by floydispink - November 27 2009 at 13:45 |

I hate the gaps on my mp3 player, I need a new one anyway. The headphone jack is funky, sometimes the sound only comes in on one side, and I have to play with the plug to get it to work, sometimes it works just fine. It is also slow and corrupts the music I have on it often.

Couldn't find it on the English part of the site (could find it on the Dutch part though). It did cost €240, but as a 17 year old I don't have that much to spend.

I'm having trouble understanding how one CD player could sound better than another, unless you are referring to the quality of the speakers. Personally, I would rather spend $350 on headphones instead of speakers if I was going to spend such a large amount of money on equipment. |

Saw that awful choir Best Buy ad featuring "Beats by Dr Dre" which are well over $200 and they appear to be made of the same crummy plastic as cheaper sets. Are there any headphones today that aren't made of cheap plastic? I know sound quality is really important when buying headphones but if I'm shelling out the big bucks I'd also like some that don't break like a $30 set.
