I am listening to the live album by Jaimie Rosas Cuarteto (called Viajero Astral - Live in Brazil) and it is a very potent, if not excellent, symphonic prog album.

I have also done some reviews of Cuban and South American albums. As far as I can remember; I liked them. The scene down there (I am in the northern hemispheres) seems healthy. Both in the 1970s and today. 

To cut this short and avoid you falling in sleep on your chairs by my ramblings:

Any bands you would recommend from this area ?

Angra and Shamman are really a masters in the prog metal movement... they put in a little folk influence... very nice, theyr'e from Brazil... I will think on a few more bands and let you know...!!!

If you like King Crimson you should check Anabelas by Bubu (Argentina). An amazing fusion of classical music and rock.

Or, if you like Kansas or Jetro Tull, from my country, Guatemala in Central America there is Alux Nahual... if you can find their LPs are better than the compilations... because there you find only radio hits, while in the LPs you got the complete package... Tongue

Depends what syle your looking for i suppose.  EXSMIO and MARS DE ROBLES are both great sounding bands on the heavy side.   HONDURAS LIBREGRUPE  and AKINETON RETARD if your adventerous.  BAUER is more in the RADIOHEAD vein but better for my tastes.Add FRAKTAL to that style as well.

Great recommendations so far, I would add Diapasao, Pocos e Nuvens, Os Mutantes, Las Orejas y la Lengua, Platurno, and not really from South America, Anima Mundi from Cuba, Astrid Pröll and Así Somos from Puerto Rico, and Iconoclasta, Toccata, Crónico and La Pura Realidad from México.

Previously mentioned, my beloved Cabezas de Cera :)

Here is an amazing (and really difficult to find even in Venezuela where it was recorded) concept album/rock opera called "Lanzas Coloradas" (based on Arturo Uslar Pietri's novel of the same name about the war of independence of Venezuela) by Ángel Ferreyra (1982) with guest appearance of Venezuelan folk singer and Latin Grammy award Simón Diaz

Tempus Fugit play pretty good symphonic prog but IMO the vocals are a bit weak.
 
Bacamarte I know are highly regarded but not owning any of their albums and having only heard bits I couldn't say from experience how good they are.
