Topic: Are there top100 albums you Hate ? (EDIT: Dislike) Posted: October 28 2009 at 01:52 |
I know that this list changes regularly, but in general, is there some constant album that you consider absolutely terrible, but people keep loving it ?
Speaking of those currently in top100, I would say (I know about 1/2 of them) EDIT: Or you just can't get into, or can't understand why they're so popular.

All the goofy modern ones. I am loathe to think that the classics are joined by no name hacks.

That's five there that are some of my favourites. Hate is to much energy but I'll say Dream Theater because it's so much fun

There are plenty which I'm not such a huge fan of but few I loathe. The Dream Theater albums are those which I dislike the most.

Had a look at top 100, there are none that I hate. The Harmonium one I don't like much plus several others I cant be bothered to type out.

I don't hate this per se, but I've been unable to get in the right frame of mind to enjoy it (there, that's a nice PC way of putting it). So far I've enjoyed Frances the Mute a lot more. I haven't heard any others besides these two.

Although I think the term 'hate' here is completely spurious, I fail to detect any merit in Lateralus by Tool whatsoever. I have tried very hard to like it but just find it irritating and cannot recall a single melodic fragment therein, so its enthusiasts claims for its sublime qualities will be forever lost on me. Similarly Images and Words by Dream Theater, to put it bluntly, just puts my 'tits in the wringer' To my hopelessly prejudiced ears, they sound like a franchise brand of US auto eroticism rawk invented by marketing executives handed the task of 'design a prog rock band you can take home to meet mother'.

I posted this elsewhere already, but the shoe fits:
Why would I *hate* any album?

For someone who apparently loves the Zappa guy, you have none of his creativity. Every last word you say is the same sh*t.

A manifestation of self-loathing, perhaps? .............................................................. I don't hate any album in the archives; however, there are many that I wouldn't enjoy.

Well, if taken as "a feeling of intense dislike". then some cases could occur. When we occasionally express ourselves in terms of "I hate this/that...", out of the many cases when it's just a stronger word for "dislike", a few valid occasions could also form.
It's not the case for me as far as the top 100 goes; I simply don't enjoy (or find'em good) albums such as Close To The Edge, Hamburger Concerto, ELP's s/t or the metal section. If, however, one of Kraftwerk's albums would be in the list, then I couldn't really deny the utmost aversion I have for it (that is, for them and the work they've achieved).

Good points, Rico. I'm sure Marty means hate as in dislike strongly. I was having a bit of tongue-in-cheek fun with with my pseudo psycho-analysis. Though I don't think I'm sufficiently an uberfan of anyone to be really disgusted by a poor (as perceived by me) album by one of my favourites, when I was very big on Gentle Giant, I might say that I loathed their final albums -- now I just don't care.

Not really.... Generally I find that even the worst (imo) of albums have some redeeming qualities even if not at all my taste or technically of poor quality. I can appreciate the intent and that others like something even if I don't like it at all. I wouldn't expect others not to love it or to stop loving it no matter what my personal feelings are. It's a matter of taste. I happen to really like a number of those albums that you think, or find to be, absolutely terrible. GonG's You particularly and Larks' Tongues in Aspic have been favourites of mine, and, even though Mahavishnu Orchestra is not my favourite Fusion project, I really respect those albums and used to really like them. To each his or her own taste. I very rarely get albums that I don't like as I commonly sample, but still even when I don't I haven't bought what would be a stinker for me for years. Back when i was getting into Prog, and I thought I was very flush with money, I bought a lot of albums and some of those were, well, for my tastes terrible (they are popular albums). These days I'm more cautious -- I have a number of people who I really trust for recommendations and am much better at researching music (I know considerably more than I did a few years ago so that helps). While there are albums I really like on it, that top popularity list is not a good reflection of my tastes and I don't use it to choose albums. Caveat emptor.

I have never really understood all the DT stuff on the top100. Bottom line, DT is fine, better than all the other todays mainstream stuff. But compared to for example, Genesis Trespass that is ranked after a few DT albums.. NOWAY!. DT is mediocre at best compared to 70s Genesis.
Larks Tongues in Aspic is abysmal and i probably won't ever understand it, and this comes from someone who loves VDGG - Plague of lighthouse keepers.

Again the same DT haters... jajaja... It really bother you that they have die hard fans right...??? jajajaa... again comparing Genesis and stuff like that... They are Prog Metal, the masters of that, like it or not... so... what's the problem... by the way, Phill Collins sings well, yeah, I like his Disney Soundtracks... jejeje... while there are not Radiohead albums on the top100, I seriously doubt I could hate a single album... jejeje...

Hate music, never. Prog or otherwise. As for albums from the top 100 that I don't particularly care for: - I've never been able to get into Pink Floyd at all. Really they just don't do it for me. For some weird reason, I mildly enjoy The Division Bell though (I suspect it's to do with the absence of RW), but I really can't listen to Dark Side or The Wall or Wish You, and while I used to listen to the early stuff for a while, I got really bored with that, too. - Larks' Tongues In Aspic: I've listened to that album dozens of times, and yet I could never remember a single note from it. That's really unusual for me and I tend to think that album and I just aren't made for each other (even though I love some other KC stuff). - Dream Theater, same as everyone ( ), they're fine basically but they don't really do it for me. Much the same for Queensryche. (And Liquid Tension Experiment, obviously.) - A few others that are basically fine but I wouldn't ever think of playing: Zappa, Supertramp, Kansas, Emerson Lake & Palmer (yeah, I could never get into them either), Santana, Moody Blues, Neal Morse. The rest I either love, like (at least a bit), or haven't heard (the latter includes all the Italian stuff).
